Title: Spark plug condition
Post by: HotrodScamp on January 22, 2014, 09:28:39 AM
Here are my plugs after about 600 miles:

Left cylinder a little rich? And right cylinder a little lean?

I definitely had an air leak at the left cylinder intake boot. Found it by spraying starting fluid around the boots and go a high idle when sprayed at the outside of the left boot. Shouldn't that air leak have caused a lean condition?

All in all the bike was running great except for a slight hesitation/surge at low throttle and stalling when pulling the clutch and stopping.  I attributed the hesitation/surge to the air leak and the stalling to tight exhaust valves. I'm in the middle of the valve adjustment (waiting for shims) and I've purchased and installed new o-rings in the intake boots.

Can't wait to get this thing back together and see how it runs! Thanks in advance for your comments.

My local dealer exchanged my shims for $4 each. 265 to 260 on the exhaust on the first adjustment at 12k miles. I ride easy.

Expensive! My dealer used to charge $1 but I think they went up to $2.

I called my local dealer on Monday and asked about shims.

"Do you guys stock 29.5mm valve shims?" "Yes we do."

"How much?" "About 5 bucks a piece."

"Great! I need 3 2.60's, 3 2.65's and a 2.30, do you have those in stock?" "Yes I do"

"Thanks! I'll be there in a hour."

I drove the 30 miles to the dealership. Parts guy came out with a box of tiny little 7mm shims. I told him I needed large 29.5mm shims. He came back with a K&L Shim starter kit that was wiped out of everything between 2.40 and 2.70.

I came home and ordered them from http://www.z1enterprises.com/ShopByCategory.aspx?name=29.5mm+Shims&description=Suzuki+over+bucket+shims&category=010204040301 (http://www.z1enterprises.com/ShopByCategory.aspx?name=29.5mm+Shims&description=Suzuki+over+bucket+shims&category=010204040301). They'll be here tomorrow.

I've also had my share of experiences with idiot dealership techs. Makes me jealous when Addy talks about Aurora  :flipoff:
