Title: Chain help?
Post by: gl0ckage on January 22, 2014, 10:04:02 AM
Ok this isn't a stock question.

Is the difference between a 520 chain and a 525 chain only the width? I have a 525 sprocket and a 520 sprocket with a 520 chain, the chain doesn't sit on the teeth properly - the chain calculator quotes that 0.625" is the correct pitch for both of these chains.
Reason i ask is i need a chain for my single swinger, i have the 525 sprocket which matches the single swings rear sprocket size now i just need a chain. Reason i have to do it this way is it's very expensive to change the rear sprocket size rather than make a front one.

Both sprockets

520, 525 and 530 all have the same pitch..... 5/8"

The sprocket you think is a 525 looks to have a bigger pitch than the 520.

It could be a 630 which has a pitch of 3/4"

Well the bike stock has a 525 and I bought the sprocket which matches the bike, I'm going to have to find a bike shop with chain samples or something.

Does that mean we could use 525 or 530 chains with the stock sprockets?
If so, would there be any benefit to this?

I am confused. Why are you trying to use a 520 chain on a 525 sprocket?
Does the bike have 520 or 525 sprockets?

Chain info is here:  http://www.gearingcommander.com//

Note the warning:
Although a 520, 525 and 530 chain have the same pitch, the roller width is different and therefore:

You can not mix a chain and sprockets of different types !

I thought 520 chain would fit due to it having same size pitch as a 525 chain.

reason i am using 525 sprockets is the single swingarm has a rare 44t 525 sprocket - Where i am the bike was a grey import which makes parts rare.

The front sprocket for the grey import bike is 525 just like the rear and fits the GS500 trans shaft. So i bought the front sprocket which is 525 and fits our GS trans shaft.

However all i need now is a chain, i would use a stock chain for the bike but because the swingarm is in a GS i need a chain with 2 more links in.which would make the chain i need 525X114.

if the pitch is the same for 525 and 520 then it must be the width that is different. Which was the question i was asking.

The sprocket i have is 525 - Was made for the bike correct part number imported straight from japan.

Using the gearing commander i have the correct sprockets and the pitch is right thanks to the information i gained i found this information:
Chain-Pitch-Width-Roller diameter
520    15.88mm    6.35mm    10.16mm
525    15.88mm    7.85mm    10.16mm

It is the width that is different - Problem solved i think :p

Adidasguy, you really are the man.

Pitch is same, width is different.   The first digit is the pitch in eighths of an inch and the second digit is the width in eighths.  A 520 has 5/8" pitch and is 1/4" between inner link plates.  A 530 has 5/8" pitch with 3/8" width.  A 525 falls between them with a 5/16" width and same 5/8" pitch.

You can get a longer chain and remove extra links. HUHSKY's gold chain was a 520-120 and we shortened it to the 110 length. Your chain tool can pop the river to shorten it if you can't get a 114 and get a longer one.
