Title: Brown goo all over outside of my carb
Post by: pirate694 on January 26, 2014, 04:07:18 PM
This has been going on for a good while now. Carbs are clean on the inside however on the outside I get this brownish stuff. It drips off the bottom of the carb. Seems like after I ride it and park the bike for few days is when it leaks. The leakage seems to stop after few days and it all dries up. I am not a carb expert so I have no idea where to even begin. Any advice?

EXTRA PICTURES OF TAKEN APART CARBS: (Goo rubbed off while I was handling them so its hard to tell. However you can see traces where it leaks from)

Oil?

Where would it come from? Top of carbs is clean, engine is clean, no oil leaks. Also by the feel it does not smell like oil and does not feel like it too. Looks more like evaporated leaked gas by smell (Sometimes I can smell it after a ride). I just have no idea what to adjust or replace. (Looked at carb gaskets and they seem OK)

Looks like fuel is coming out of the drain port and then misting around that area.

Try tightening the drain screw on the bowl.....that's the lowest one facing out in the 2nd pic.

Don't go too heavy on it though, they are relatively fragile and its unlikely you will have the correct JIS screwdriver.

float bowl gaskets?
split fuel line?

also, zip tie that filter up of the engine. the vibrations will wear a hole in it, and it will become a big problem really fast

Junk that filter!

Its not doing you any good, also you might want to put new gaskets on your float bowls and give them a good cleaning.

Fuel lines are new. Filter looks ok but it is indeed needed to be replaced (Can I use any aftermarket filter? I heard somewhere that you have to use suzuki one which is pricey). Again gaskets look ok and carbs are spotless. I took them off and will post pics in a little bit. As far as float drain crew goes I tried that. I even tried swapping it from the other carb and see if other one starts to leak but it didnt. That fuel goo seems to drain down to it and forms into a drop when it sits still.

EDIT:

Added more pictures.

If it is oil, the only way I can think of it would get there is a lot of engine blowback through the carbs.

Only one filter that I know of its not really a filter but rather a screen inside the tank. That filter is aftermarket and not designed for the bike, junk it!

Tested it out by putting together and putting bit fuel in and leaving them for few days. No leaks at all. I have considered posiblity of gas just evaporating but if it did, it would make this brown goo. Any other suggestions I am running out of ideas (Mostly to my lack of knowledge about carbs)

You've got a small gas leak. My old gsxr had that issue. Mine turned out to be a float bowl gasket weeping, just spray it down with some brake cleaner and put baby powder on the carbs. It'll show where your leak is coming from

I've hadgood luck reusing float bowl gaskets but you need to get the gaskets and the channel in the float bowl super clean for them to seal properly.

Yeah I used some RTV silicone. I know it may be a bad idea but I want to see if gaskets were the problem which it sounds like it is.
