Title: Seat lock Mech replacement.
Post by: robfriedenberger on January 29, 2014, 12:32:10 AM
Hey guys I'm looking to replace the seat lock on my 04' gs500, the PO broke the key off in the old lock and just pulled it out and junked it........ So now I'm looking to replace it on the parts sites the lock is $73.36 which is more than I want to pay. So if i don't replace it I'm just going to plug the hole and come up with some thing different. In the next few days, I was going to check with the local lock smith to see if he could make a lock that would fit my key and rig some thing up for the cable.

Any one do any thing like this before?

Any better ideas?

If I plug the hole I'd just put a pull handle on the cable and mount it under the rear faring.

Check ebay... you can get any GS500 rear seat lock WITH KEY(I think the seat lock is same fit for all years, but please someone verify).  Then you can take the new rear seat lock key and your existing ignition/gas cap key to a locksmith, and they can make a two sided key from those.  One side will go into ignition and gas cap and turn, the other side will go into seat lock and turn.  The other option would be to just replace the full set (ignition, gas cap, seat lock). Just a quick search and I found rear seat lock with key only, and full ignition gas cap and rear seat lock sets, starting from $30 upto $85.  Saw a few full sets for around $65...

Seat locks are simple to re-key. They come apart with ease. We re-key them all the time around here. Often you can move around the wafers to make the key work. Sometimes leave out a wafer or file it to fit.

If security isn't an issue, you can zip-tie the cable to the frame of the bike. I did this on my race bike.

Security really isn't a big issue but I work over night and so during the summer months the bike is left out over night.....I have about $20 of harbor freight tools under there so  :dunno_black:

I seen a few turn up on ebay, its just the sticker price is to much for me, Ill have to keep an eye out or get creative the cheapest lock I seen was $30 which seams to be a lot for a simple lock.  :dunno_black:
