Title: Portable tachometer???
Post by: deck95gs500e on January 27, 2004, 11:35:57 PM
Hi All,

I know I can adjust the idle speed  through the idle screw but the Clymer manual mentioned attaching a portable tachmeter when adjusting it so just wondering if anyone uses one. Brand and how to will be great.

I can get my hands on one thats measure RPM if you point it towards a moving objects but wondering how would I use that for my bike  :(

thanks,
Derick

There is a tach that uses spark plug pulses to red rpm... JC whitney had one I think. But I doubt its use in setting idle rpm. Sounds like too much work... espesially cos we fiddle with it depending on weather, our patience and any damn thing...
Cool.

Perhaps the manual assumes that you'll be sitting on the ground next to the bike and unable to see the regular tacho... When I'm adjusting my idle I tend to sit on the bike and reach down under the carbs - that way I can see.

COULD be as simple as that, although I'm certainly not one to second-guess the manual.
