Title: WTB 2005 EU style license holder
Post by: pettyburger on March 02, 2014, 02:09:35 PM
I want to get the EU standard license plate holder for a 2005 GS500F, has the extra reflector that drops down on the bottom for safety.

Any suggestions?

Same for all years. What specifically do you want? The rear plastic fender? If so, order one from a dealer for like $42.
Reflector? Many of us have extras.
While there is a metal bracket for the fender, I and others just bolt the plate directly to the plastic fender for a cleaner look.

You want a look similar to my HUHSKY rear end in my avatar? That's all stock. Also same rear fender all over the world.

I was just informed by a friend that they all came stock with what I am looking for. Everyone cuts them down to look cool. If I wanted to look cool I would buy a Lambretta with Yosemite Sam mud flaps.

I have not had time to go look at the fender, and this is a brand new bike for me.

So I have to replace the whole fender to make it stock again as it is all one piece?

If so, I might do that. Someone cutting the fender to look cool really annoys me. That extra plastic in back keeps the wet from coming up my backside. Some idiot had this bike before me, so now I am trying to make it look like an idiot did not own it before me. If a new rear fender is all it takes then I am going for it.

Plus I am thinking about shipping the thing to Madrid to take a ride around the Basque country for a vacation, needs to look localized for the trip. Repatriating this Spanish machine for a bit.

Like this one, is what I am looking for.

Also, the very same idiot painted the windscreen black. Any suggestions on finding a cheap clear one and avoiding the dealer?

Check a parts list. This one was $45  6 months ago from my dealer. Buying a used one most likely will cost more when you add on postage. No postage when bought from your dealer.
Some parts just make more sense to buy new since used prices are high. Some other parts makes more sense to buy used.

Unless you get one dirt cheap that is in decent condition, buy one.
The rear fender is the same for all years and models, so just order the newest part as I did.

I mount mine like this. I think it is a cleaner look. Reflectors on the license plate is a little too much here, though I admit.

I do have the plate bracket and reflector bracket & reflector if you want to use the OEM brackets like in your picture.

Also I have a nearly new OEM wind screen from my 2009.

awesome. much respect to the huskies. my team went 1-11 this year, but we lead the PAC 12 in nobel laureates, like it matters.

and no one messes with our rugby team, since 1882 (before football): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_rugby

thank you husky, and go bears!

I did not see your second post...yes I may be interested in your hardware and a windscreen. Let me scrounge up some cash after I get a new gas tank first. Its a 2005 F model with only 2000 miles on it but it is a work in progress. Just got the carbs rebuilt an hour ago and got her up to 100 mph on the freeway....love this bike.

I will come find you when I have some $$$ to spend on this bike. I was not expecting the gs500 to be so nice to ride. the saddle is a little hard compared to my RD400, but these things float like air on the freeway at high speed. I am stoked I bought a GS at the suggestion of a good friend.

Thank you Husky!

you are not running the stock battlax bt45 tires, which I also have on my RD.

what kind of tires are those?

the reflectors on the bolts are not overkill at all. I'm thinking of plastering hi-viz reflective tape all over the damn thing to scream "safety!" and "don't hit me!" since the idiot before me painted the entire thing white. looks like a cop bike, not a GS500F.

yeah I need the fender from the dealer, bracket and reflector from you and a windscreen. gimme some time to fix more critical items and I will be back to find you husky.

HUHSKY has Pirelli Sport Demons. I wanted something different for her.
All my other GS's have stock tires.

I cannot keep my bikes immaculate like yours. If my bikes were as clean as yours, I would never take them out to dirty them up.

Sport Demon sounds nefarious. Pirelli is a good tire, pure Italy. None of the German tires appeal to you? Bridgestones are nice and they are made in Japan, but something different is nice. Does Metzeler make a good tire for the GS?

I just took my first GS to work today, and it was really nice. I love the bike as it is, stock and comfortable; but my nutsack and the end of a short commute felt the adverse effects. The saddle is too hard for me. Can you recommend a softer seat? I have seen suggestions in another thread about how to cure the nutsack issue, and none of that works. I can't ride with tank grips, feels unnatural having my knees like that. This bike is for the freeway only, 100 miles to and fro daily.

I have the metal bracket that holds the license plate, but some idiot cut a brand new fender to make it look "cool." Pisses me off. This bike has only 2000 original miles and it is a mess. Let me get the fender from the dealer first and I will come get the reflector assembly from you in due time. I need a clean windscreen too eventually.

This is why I came here at the suggestion of a friend: good people and good parts.

and the tow yard removed the rear tank bolts and then broke the bracket under the seat looking for booty. I replaced the tank bolts but the bracket has no bolts and is broken where the ball end of the cable goes into the plastic, so I need a new one of those. also there is a strand of metal frayed from the cable so I may as well replace that too. what is that part called? an old strap from a computer bag is holding the seat on.

bastards stole the tool kit which was presumably under the seat. can those still be ordered from the dealer?
