Title: Trouble After Carb Cleaning
Post by: JacJak on March 10, 2014, 01:50:35 PM
Just cleaned the jets, put everything back together and now have two problems.

1.) When I put the choke on, it dies. I just took the gas tank back off to get a look and the choke cable is pulling fine and looks like normal operation.

2.) Won't accelerate. The engine runs and rev's but will not move forward. Only exception is when I have the clutch half-way out and it just starts to catch. I didn't mess the with clutch cable at all.

While taking apart the carbs and continuing research, I realized I probably didn't actually have to clean the carbs, but just do a sync, so I only cleaned the jets and float bowls.

I should add that it may not run only going uphill. Once I put everything back together, I was going to ride, so I rode it down my flat (about 35 meters) driveway, pulled out onto the road at an uphill slant and that's when it stopped accelerating.

It would help if you listed the year of the bike, location, etc. as the carbs were changed in 01 and stock jetting varies by year location sold.

Possible issues include miss-adjustment of the throttle cable(s), jets in wrong location (on 01+ carbs), mixture screws off, idle adjust off .......

It's a 2007 GS500f, Baltimore area.

It idles at 1200rpm, I may have hit the idle adjust screw as it used to have it set slightly higher (about 1300), but I don't think that would be an issue. I did not mess with the mixture screws.

Could it be an actual fuel issue? I let it sit over winter without treatment.

I'm pretty sure I installed the jets wrong.

Does the small holed jet go in the top or bottom?

Does the small holed jet go in the top or bottom?

On the 3-jet carbs; the main (130 stock in the US) goes in the brass hex extension and the mid-main (60 stock) goes in the silver port just in front of the main.

Note: the jet sizes are stamped on the bottom or side of the jet itself.

Thank you for the help, hopefully that's my only problem.
