Title: 07 gs500 long road ahead
Post by: Nocluejoe on March 17, 2014, 04:17:36 PM
So I purchased my first motorcycle it's a 2007 gs500f. It seems like a nice bike only downside is the previous owner removed all the fairings off the bike so it looks naked right now. Currently looking around for ideas and any tips on the bike, what to look out for or etc send em my way thanks!

Nice man, not a bad looking bike. I say keep it this way, or order some fairings and put them back on! Haha.

No offense to you at all, but most of the time when people go down the street fighter route they end up chopping a perfectly good looking gs up and leave it looking ugly hahaha.

What are your plans? And good luck with your build man!

Oh no offense takin, I personally don't like the fairings removed I think the headlight is ugly and I'm looking into a new head light . It's just the way it came lol I plan on cleaning up some of the rust on the exhaust piping hopefully a new exhaust In the near future. I wanna get it repaired the frame and the bike like a matte black not to sure and I'm going to try and make a custom headlight fairing should be a fun project I'll try and update once in  a while

Looks similar to mine, except I put dual headlights on and relocated the rear turn signals. Don't chop anything else off! lol

Kind of going the same route I am! I went with dual headlights and hoping down the road to do a simple satin black paint job. Non-motorcycle people already mistake it for a ducati :P

Both of those bikes look good I'm not planning on chopping anything off so don't worry lol I spent the week riding it and enjoying it but I repainted the exhaust so there is no rust and the front rotor so there is no rust.

I'm looking into getting dual headlights tomorrow been looking around found some at advanced auto parts 2 dual 55 watt headlights 3" a few reviews everyone said there bright and work good.

My speedometer is broke so I need a new one I was thinking of a cheap digital speedometer on eBay for 70$ will report back with some pics and updates soon

Ordered a delkevic exhaust and a new digital speedometer should be here Monday.

Took the front tire off and painted it black to match the rear tire came out good just working on getting the brake back on  :2guns:

So here is my questions.... Is there any way to tell if the previous owner jetted the carbs? With out opening up the carb obviously. I idle at 3k for 5ish minutes then it drops to 1.5k I adjusted the idle screw and check vacuum lines and spark plugs everything is good is that a sign? Once the exhaust is here and installed I'll be able to tell you how it runs then.

any way to tell .... ask them? ...

cant think of any way to do it yourself WITHOUT looking in at least some part of the carb?

I would need to take apart the carb in order to look in it correct? Just trying to avoid taking it apart until I'm ready to have the bike un useable for a few days unless you know a way I can view the jets please tell me  :thumb:

But I can't ask previous owner bought it from a dealership and they knew very little about the previous owner

i'd PM buddha .. unless he replies here first... he seems to be the primo carb chap here... he might know a minimalist approach?

You can look to see if there are signs they have been opened before.  Stock, there are four JIS screws in each corner of the bowls holding them on the bottom of the carb.  If they look like some are stripped or they have been replaced, then it has had carb work done previously, and 'could' indicate a rejet, but more likely just a cleaning if it had stock air filter and pipe... If the screw heads look old and unmolested, then they've probably never been opened.

Okay thank you I'll take a look in a lil while I have done a lot to the bike past few days. A big headache but worth it lol

I got a digital speedometer from eBay that I installed works well so far the wiring was a nightmare caz everything was in engrish. If anyone buys a speedometer and needs help installing it feel free to ask me any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. I wired the magnetic sensor in the front by the rotor. I made a custom bracket for the speedometer out of an old scooter fender fiberglass and bondo over it with a metal bracket on the inside came out pretty good and very rigid.

I also got my delkevic exhaust from eBay In and I installed that as well sounds very nice with out the silencer it is LOUD like get pulled over loud but with the silencer sounds amazing at 3k and under and higher than 3k it's screaming and sounding wonderful very well worth it only paid 110$ US dollars for it as well.

Installed bar end mirrors as well

Things I wanna do still

Jet the bike
Install either pods or a lunchbox witch would you prefer?
Fix the gas tank rattle. I need the rubber pieces that sit under it
Black out the tail light, turn signals, and headlights
Repaint the exhaust

What ... what ... what ...

I like the round GS headlight. But there is a tribar I think SV headlight that looks damn good.
Cool.

I have the exact same speedometer. Could I ask how you managed the wiring? Mine came with no instructions at all! :cookoo:

In between the brake caliper and the magnet fit perfectly in the holes in the rotor. Working on a way to glue it in right now

But how did you connect the other cables? Did you connect it to the connector inside the bike's headlight straight away?

I'm not sure what your asking are you asking the color wires to witch color wires on the bike?  The wire connectors are in the bracket I made hidden

What do you mean by "ignition pack"? I have all the wiring resolved, except for the ignition signal.

Where you plug your key into strip pack the pack and expose the red wire and splice it in there.

What year is your bike?

It's a 1994 model. Yes, I have all the cables connected already, but the RPMs aren't showing well. I have the signal wire wrapped around one of the spark plug wires, it detects the signal but it only shows half the RPMs. For example, when I rev the engine to 4000rpm it shows exactly 2000rpm.

Did you configure it to show the correct RPM values? Or should I connect the signal wire to another wire?

Thanks a lot!

Wrap it around both spark plug wires... 2000 each is 4000!! .. Easy!  :icon_mrgreen:

I've tried it, and it seems to work well up to about 4000rpm. Above that the needle gets jerky and drops back to 4000, even if the engine keeps revving. I don't know how to set it up just right  :dunno_black:

I've solver the problem by connecting the RPM sensor to another source, works nice and it's not jumpy at all!  :woohoo:

If someone else has trouble with the install, just ask away or send me a PM. Getting the wiring sorted out is kinda tricky.
