Title: Riding gear- Anyone have slim-fit pants recommendations?
Post by: AnonRider on March 24, 2014, 07:03:20 PM
Seriously, trying to find some slim fit pants that aren't a foot too long or look like i'm in a rap group. Material doesn't matter, as long as it protects. Budget is 150-250. draggin' twista jeans and the maple jeans are out of my budget for the moment.

I was in the same boat as you.

I didn't come up with the greatest solution, but I wear Levis 511 or Bullhead Dillons and I wear a pair of Thor knee/shin guard armor over them.

I've got excellent fitting protection for my upper body -maybe too much. I feel like I would need more protection on my butt as I've seen too many ass road rash pictures/stories. Maybe I can get some abrasion resistant material and get a seamstress to sew it in nicely.

How about some genuine leather? It doesn't get better than that... Don't shy away from buying used if on a budget, you're gonna wear some thin layer under 'em anyways.. That's if you ever want to get them off during Summer. :thumb:

I don't mind second hand at all! Any recommendations?

I'm crafty enough and I've sewn up some pants in the pants-- I just ordered 3 yards of heavy duty (5oz) aramid to line pants that I like.

The kevlar is not very pricey, it's about 12 dollars per 50inch yard. Compared to other fabric - it is pricey.

So, I'm going to study some other kevlar designs and hope for the best here.

IF this project goes well I'll be open to help out anyone else that wants custom pants.

I really like my Drayko Drift Jeans.  I picked them up for about $140, although the price might have gone up.

Keep in mind quality thread is a must on a project such as this - your fabric and padding won't do any good if it doesn't hold together.  I would suggest DuPont Kevlar thread - really tough stuff as far a thread goes.  You do have a sewing machine, right?  Stitching needs to be tight and consistent to avoid weak spots.

It is Dupont kevlar 5oz so it is probably a heavier kevlar than what is in most gear. I've done some patchwork and sewing before so I think this will come out nicely if I double or triple stitch it. I'm going to create  pouches for adding a slim ce armor in the knee and hip.

Sounds like a good plan.  Don't hesitate to PM me if you need anything on that - I have probably spent more at Joanne fabrics than I have on bike farkles, and have sewn for quite a few years.  To add some morsel of manliness behind that statement  ;)...  I used to make pants for jumping stilts while in college for extra money, and there are a lot of similar considerations for riding pants.

Well, I'm probably a few thousand clicks away from you, so brands might be slightly different there. I'm sure others can help you choose something locally available :thumb:

Here you go:

First day I learned to backflip on them... springs were getting badly worn out, have replaced them couple times since though.
