Hey guys,
GIANT newbie in general with motorbikes,
i have a 96 Gs500e and the gauges bug me so i bought some new ones.
nothing flash but it was cheaper to get the electronic Tacho.
As i am going from a Mechanical to an electronic, everything i have read says i need to draw a signal feed from the coil or the plug wire......
Problem is, i got NFI what that actually is....
i mean, i can do electronics no problem, fabricate new plate mounts and all that, so it LOOKS sweet... but if someone out there could help me just figure out what the hell i have to wire the signal into.... i would be extremely grateful!
Regards,
The newest of n00b's
Splice the tach lead into the WHITE wire on the coil. Don't cut, just splice. You just need the unit to read the pulse heading into the coil.
ok now just to be clear the coil is...... ?
If anyone can provide a simple photo with an arrow.... lol
that would satisfy my idiocy!
ignition coil is at the other end of your spark plug wire
so find the spark plug. follow the wires back till i find the white one?
sounds easy :-D
......Please please please do not ask us what a spark plug is :D
Yes its that simple the spark plugs are at the top of the motor on either side you really cant miss them, you may need to remove the tank to gain access to the wires for the coil. Tank comes off by removing the seat and 2 12MM bolts on either side near the rear of the tank.
BAHAHAHA
thankfully i know what a spark plug is....
have had to take the tank off afew times before so that shouldn't be a problem.
I'll give it a shot thanks for the advise.
i'll post pic's if i get epicly confused....
cheers
you should be able to wrap the tach pickup wire around the spark plug wire; no cutting or splicing whatsoever.
Ok so.....
Done all that, signal wire going to white canle coming from coil...
But nothing...
Anyway i can check, using a multimeter or anything, if my tacho is a dud?
"Black line lock positive electrode
Green line lock negative electrode
Yellow line contacts signal
Some models need to attach high voltage signal line"
This shows my tacho setup. I have green wire as ground, and black wire is on 'accessories' power,
yellow is wired in the white cable coming off coil...
Any thoughts?
What tach are you using? Mine had a simple setting in the unit itself, you just selected high or low signal. Mine read as nothing until I switched to the high setting. Otherwise, sounds like you have it setup just fine.
Jus an ebay special

That's digital? Huh. Alrighty. My next question I should have asked before was, is it not turning on at all, or just not showing RPM?
I noticed about that you mentioned getting power from "accessories". Why is that in quotes? There are a few lines that are full 12v once the bike is up and running, which one did you tap into? If you have power on that line when you turn the key to "On", then you should be all set. Also, make sure that ground wire is making good contact with whatever you have it connected to...whether it's the frame or directly to the neg. terminal on the battery.
Soloratov, not digital, electronic.
And the only way i could tell if its turning on would be showing rpm, so not sure
Also, accessories was in " cause i didnt know if its still called that on a bike. Lol
It is as you said, power only once key is turned.
Ground wire is also good. I checked all the wiring for strong connections afew times over :-(
