Hi. Why is it necessary to remove the damper rod bolt when changing fork seals? As far as I can make out the damper rod is not attached to anything at its top end. Oil can be drained from the top of the forks. Cheers Cerberus.

Oil draining is not the problem.
Changing the seal is.
If the damper rod is not attached to anything as you say it, the only thing keeping the forks together would be gravity (and the weight of the motorcycle), and that just isn't the case.
;)
The damper rod is (beside the damping role) preventing the upper part of the fork (the tube) from popping out of the fork leg.
Once you disassemble the forks, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Unless ofcourse, you're planing to change the seals without disassembling, which I wouldn't recommend, because there is a chance you'll damage the new seals in process, if you somehow manage to pull out the old ones first.
