To those of you who wonder what's in a 1993 exhaust muffler, here you go:
The unfortunate muffler:

Left = closest to header, sits on-top of middle:

And the flip side, the end cap goes ontop of the middle which goes ontop of the left part
(http://www.illenium.de/GSTWINS/IMG-20140324-00470.jpg)
What do we learn from that?
1) This 93 exhaust has no steel wool nor fiberglass packing
2) After the header is an open chamber that has two pipes going
all the way to the 3rd chamber.
3) The middle chamber has 5 pipes, two that run through it (from the first chamber), 2 that let exhaust gases in from the third chamber and one that goes all the way to the muffler tip. Each pipe is approx. 3/4 inch in diameter
So if I'm being shot through the exhaust, I would travel from the midpipe into the first muffler chamber, from there to the third chamber, from the third to the 2nd chamber and finally out the exhaust tip
Maybe this helps someone modify their exhaust.
NOTE, BEFORE YOU CUT THE MUFFLER SCORE A LINE FROM TOP TO BOTTOM SO YOU CAN RE-ALIGN THE PIECES WHEN YOU WELD THEM BACK TOGETHER (PITA if you dont
do this which I didnt ... :icon_eek: ..)
I tossed the first chamber, welded two pipes into the 2nd chamber and welded everything together for a stubbie. Can't report on performance loss / gain nor noise level just yet, but hopefully coming weekend. The GS I'm working is shorter than the
stock GS thus the need for a shorter exhaust. As for jetting, I put a 2006 engine
in this 93 with the 2006 wiring harness, the carb was stock, I'm adding a KN Drop-In, i'm starting
jetting @ sealevel @ 145 x 65 x 20 and if thats too rich go down to 142.5 x 62.5 x 20.
Note, this is for looks and not performance. I have no clue what will come out of this.
Let me add the metal is nice gauge, would say maybe 18-20 gauge, so easy to weld. If you plan to do this, cut right next to the original weld. You can than weld everything back
together easily by tracking the original weld and less change to burn through the metal. Plus
its nice and beefy for a strong as stock muffler
Will be in touch :thumb:
PS: excuse my spelling / grammar, I'm austrian and this is the internetzzz :D
I just want to say thanks for posting this. This type of original, unique information is what makes a forum great.
Too bad I don't have my old muffler off my 04 GS. I would have done the same and posted pics. I think the newer GSs have more emissions related packing in the mufflers. I know for sure it was heavy as hell -- easily 10x the weight of the Delkevic shorty that replaced it.

I did notice that the muffler off an 2009 donor was about 25% bigger than the 2001 and 1993 muffler. Also the diameter
of the mid-pipe seems to be bigger on the 2009. If I find another one locally I'll be sure to cut that one open too
Just occurred to me I never posted pictures of the shorty exhaust. I basically eliminated the third chamber and
modified the 2nd one, I went two sizes up on the jets from before. It (as expected) didn't add any performance
but it did give it a nice yet manageable sound volume (grunted like my Super Tenere 1200 with Stock Exhaust).
I sold the bike right after completion to get room, along with my other bikes. Got one GS5 left though :thumb:
Those who wonder, yes that is an oil cooler. There is a 2006 engine with 3k miles in this 1993 frame. If anyone
is interested in the tail I can give you some pointers, I made it from Fiberglass and can make more if there
is enough interest, can easily be fitted to a cut frame.

Now I haven't come across another donor exhaust (the later years that are larger diameter), offer still stands if I do, I'll cut that sucker open too :thumb:
