Title: Spark plug check
Post by: newbie1993 on April 01, 2014, 09:07:12 PM
I pulled My plugs to see if it's time to replace them and also to see whether I'm running lean or rich. What do you guys think? (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/02/sa5ubuty.jpg)

No- plugs should be just as removed. WET is an indication of how it is running. If you wiped them off, we wouldn't know how your bike was running.
Also make note of which is the left and which is the right side.

This one is from the left side. I would've pulled the other but I freaked when my bike lost all power

Ok, there are some gaps to fill in here...

You were trying to start it, and it wasn't starting... which so far looks to be the battery as the cause... so a little wet under these conditions would be normal.

So aside from being wet, the color really doesn't look too bad, it is a little dark, but brown is the color you want.

Report back with both sides, and pics after it was actually running for a few mins... reminder that the plugs may look different running at idle vs partial throttle vs full throttle.

After running for about 10 minutes left side plug is on the left and right side plug is on the right(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/03/geqaga5u.jpg)

Left side looks like it's not sparking, the right side looks good, plug your left side into the coil, and ground it to the block to check for spark, if it's sparking check for compression

Lolz...he said "sisters box"

But seriously, if I pulled a plug and it was that corroded on the outside, it would never go back in again. Them things aren't that expensive, buy a new set, if only to rule out a bad plug  :dunno_black:

No, but because of the hairpin electrode/tip, they need approximately 5,000 less volts than a standard plug to fire.

Do you have any products you can suggest to prevent or even prolong corrosion?

To me that dark one looks like it's oily rather than rich... so, lack of spark on that pot... valvestem oil seals... rings?
(Iridiums don't perform better, they just last longer).

The external corrosion isn't really an issue, it just made me wonder how old the plugs are.

Will do. But my new question is whether I'm running lean or rich according to my plugs
