Title: Bike wont start - please help
Post by: REDLINE1 on April 07, 2014, 08:04:29 AM
Hi guys, still having problem here with bike not starting.

I've got re-jet kit from Buddha and upgraded my carbs to +1 on the jets and also was able drill out the seal to the mixture screws which i did turn it all the way in and than backed out 3 full turns. Also took out the needle and added the included O ring under the C clip for each side. (the order its in now: washer, C clip, O ring, Plastic doughnut, washer)

Got it all hoses connected and put it back in the bike.
Changed my Oil and Filter -( the first time it happened my air box got flooded with gas and also there was gas in the oil.)
Cleaned Spark Plugs. (They where black :( )
Added almost full take of gas.
Turned to Prime for few seconds maybe a minute than turned to ON
Battery check full charge.
Turn on the choke and tied to start the bike.  No luck.  I tried on cranking it but no start.  One time i think it did almost stat made a sound but that was it. never again.
I don't know what else is wrong... its almost having same issue as before i upgraded the Jets and made adjustments to the carb :( its like i never did anything to it....

Any idea what else i can check that could be causing this no start issue? Please help

make sure to check over the simples first, spark, compression, fuel, air... give your plugs a wipe and turn over the engine a few times and check if there wet, check the spark against the frame, i feel it may be an air problem in all honesty, check your filter and clean it if need be. let us know if you get her running though.

Hi, so i checked for pressure and suction - removed the spark plug and put my thumb on it - by my self it was little tricky but i was able to get it i think.  It sucked my thumb in and pushed it out as i turned on the starter.  Also i put in clean spark plugs and tested each side for spark against the frame - got spark on both sides.  I checked again for fuel in the carbs by unscrewing the drain screw and there was gas dripping.  After putting the spark plugs back in i tried to start the bike again few times.  Choke on and even used the throttle a bit to give it a little extra and it kind of did turn few times but not again.  so i pulled the spark plugs out and they where wet and dark.  I did put in new K&N air filter :) so the air flow should not be a problem unless too much air at this point ? PS I have straight-pipe exhaust.
Also Buddha pointed out that my valves could be bad_ but i think as far as valve clearance i dont know if that could be and issue, my bike is only like about to hit 10k miles... plus everything was working just fine until that one day when i was not able to start it after not ridding few months well like 8 or so :( knee injury... anyways this starting to confuse the heck out of me... i do remember driving on prime instead of on or reserve (rookie carb mistake), do you think that could have cause the valves to mess up - how to check? Thanks

if the bike isnt that old then i wouldnt think itd be the valves, just check the clearance of the valves and replace the shims if needed ill pop a vid in for you how to check pal, like i said i wouldnt think it'd be the valves, but you never know.

Check float height using the clear U-tube method.  Attach clear tubing to the drain on each carb, bend upwards in a U-shape, turn frame petcock to prime, open drain screw.  Verify that the level the gas goes up to on each carb level with the carb bowl gasket, no higher, no lower.  Don't forget to close drain screw, turn petcock back to ON position afterwards.  It sounds like it may be flooding, and that could be from float heights or something else in the carbs - that method will tell you if you need to look in those carbs.
