Title: GS500F stall and gas leak after extensive dealer maint.
Post by: cole on April 07, 2014, 05:39:34 PM
Problem: bike runs fine for a few miles and then cuts off at idle. Will restart though dies again and only stays running if being revved past 2.5k. Noticed a couple of times that there was quite a bit of gas on the ground after overnight parking.

Real problem(?) I took my bike in for an extensive service. Replace gaskets base upwards and the clutch gasket as well, valve adjust, time adjust, carb synch,   replace plugs and filter.

Now the bike was running fine before despite it being overdue for a service. They had my bike for a while, longer than necessary, and I have had to return it already. The initial problem was because the bike would misfire intermittently at idle and then the revs would also hang(the initial time adjust was off one tooth). They fixed it and the bike runs beautifully except for the problems. I have had the bike for 2 days now, which they were closed for. Frankly I think it's dangerous and luckily I have had it happen(twice now) only at red lights. Gas leak, also twice.

Question: What could the issue be? Forum searches leads me to believe that it's a stuck float. Who would be at fault here, could they have tinkered my carbs? Mechanic did say he touched my carbs though I am not sure what that entails.

It's my daily, so I need it up and running and not having my bike fully operational for two weeks it's highly inconvenient. Mind you the service was $529.00 not including the gaskets.

I don't have the time to work on my bike nor the space and I have used the before repeatedly as the bike has ~37k miles. Their work has always been reliable though I'm concerned that their expansion and relocation has definitely reduced my regard for them.

Is this highly coincidental? Help as I am at wits end and still trying to be professional without going in there "guns blazing" my bike is now left overnight at work so I can take it back in tomorrow...it's closer from work to the shop. Risk of death is low.

Thank you,

Cole - FL

Floats are probably sticking, or too high or something ... is the gas from the airbox vent ? then definitely float is overflowing.
It can ruin your motor if it hydrolocks ... however it is a simple enough problem to check and fix ... a mechanic could do it in a matter of minutes. If you brought me a cold bike after I worked on it the first time, I'd do it free ... of course I would also replace the float bowl screws the first time with allen bolts. Or better yet, do it right the first pass ... he he ...

I know they changed the boots as well, could they have fiddled with it then? I just find it implausible that bike runs fine and then not fine. I can't tell where the gas is coming from as it's always when I'm away. Hopefully it replicates at the shop. Also, I feel it's time to talk to the owner. -_-

To change the boots you have to remove the carbs. In a 89-00 bike, the floats drift high, I'd really want to set the floats every other year at the least.
So if they didn't do that, I'd say its enough to get your float overflowing.

Hey thank you for that last post, it definitely gives me an idea of what's going on. I dropped off a tad after 9 and was promised at least a phone call by lunch. I'm now concerned unless they take late lunches. The owner is aware and has been updated and taking a personal interest in getting this resolved. I feel it's in  their hands now and will not call until closer to close as I don't want to rush them nor be that customer.

They have a department that works on sport bikes.
They have a department that works on cruisers.

Since they dont know what this is, this bike along with a bunch of others like the 83 nighthawk 650 etc etc are sitting on the boorder between the 2 departments looking sad and forlorn and looking left then slowly turning right ...

Cool.
