Title: Well just bought a klr 650.. But the gs500 community is so much more charismatic
Post by: aaronmact on April 18, 2014, 08:47:30 AM
the title says it all folks. I sold my baby that I built ( you all probably remember it) and I since then bought a klr 650 for 700 bucks. Its needed a bunch of work but it should be on the road within the next week or so. Ive only had it for about 3 days and have gone through rebuilding the carb, petcock, master cylinder, bleeding the brakes. Doing new sprockets  and chain, battery, brake pads, handles, new tires, odometer cable, new filters and fluids. All the fun shaZam! haha. Anyways, Ill post up a pic of my old gs then get on to some before and after pics of the klr 650 for now :)

Well onto the klr 650. Basically this thing hadnt run in over two years, no battery, no starter switch, filled with old caramelized gas, sprockets were missing teeth. The chain was a rusty mass, the rear caliper didnt even have pads so someone was braking metal on metal. I had to rebuild the carb, master cylinder, petcock, as well as both calipers. I also managed to re wrap the seat and try and make the bike look semi better. I have a ton of new parts coming in and will hopefully have it on the road soon. Id take more pics, but Im back to a stupid phone for now :( so they arnt that great.

Nice I like it! unfortunatly it keeps telling me my current new photos of the bike are too big :( how easy is it for you to move your bike in gear with the clutch in? Even with mine adjusted as much as i can i practaically have to put all my force in to move it

Hmmmm, that is not good.  Mine is/was easy.  I would check that the cable is not worn before you do anything else.  How many miles on it?

Any bike when cold is hard to move in gear because the clutch plates are sticking together.
When warm, they don't stock together.
Be in neutral to move it.
All sounds normal.
Isn't the bike missing a rear brake caliper?

Pictures: Use any image editing program to reduce them to about 900 pixels wide. Then they will be fine.

I like it! and it has both calipers haha. Its just missing em in that picture cause I took it out into the yard to scrub the mountains of dirt and dust off it. The caliper is currently back on, unsiezed, bled, and sporting some brand new brake pads :)

I am slightly worried about the condition of my doohickey though.. I havent gotten a chance to really get in there and see how good the spring is

Honestly I miss my bike alot. I loved the gs500. The only reason I sold it is I couldn't get a title for it. Ive chased the Virginia dmv for a full year about it and they keep sending me in circles. So I sold her :/
