Ok, so I have had my GS for a couple years now and have not had any problems whatsoever.
What am I doing wrong? Should I pull the carbs apart and screw with them or maybe pull the engine apart? I just don't know what to do, help please :flipoff:
You should convert your naked to an E model... just sayin' :whisper:
Get rid of that hideous 7'' headlight, and get a round one...

LOL!!!
I'm with you...I got my GS in 2010...now 38,000 miles....Not one problem!!!
Oh, wait...one instrument light burned out.
I'm a great believer in..."if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!
I'm not sure why so many have so many problems...I am sure that "monkeying with a perfectly good bike" is some of the cause.....one reason I would be very careful buying a used motorcycle.

Well I'd start with removing the starter clutch bolt (saves weight and may lead to goats). Than remove your air box and leave the carbs open ( way more power and when it back fires through the carbs you can feel it)
I'm at 11k on my bike 3k I did. The PO's that dropped it caused all of my issues, some people on here do not thing that dropping the bike would cause issues with the starter clutch but I'm positive they did with my bike. I'm hoping to get another 20k out of this bike!

My 97 GS bought new went 80k miles with no engine work except routine maintenance. Setting valves within Suzuki specs resulted in an exhaust valve being down to a minimum 215 shim at 80k. Oil consumption went up after 50-60k miles when run at high rpm like interstate travel or freeway commuting. It was totaled at 80k and replaced with the 02. I went to the wider exhaust valve settings on the 02 when it first required shim changes at about 30k miles and they have held like intake valves since with a 245 shim being the smallest in it at 100k miles.
Bought my 02 in 03 with 4k miles on it and discovered a tight exhaust valve bucket during a valve check at 10k miles. Valve was free for the day within a minute after startup so I decided to let it go with no shim changes and see if it would wear in a bit. It didn't and one very cold morning it stuck open and went bang while cranking to start and I had to pull head to replace the broken valve and the tight bucket at about 20k miles. After that repair it went another 80k trouble free miles running like new until a couple weeks ago with 500 (100.5k) miles on the clock it developed a knock which I am working on now. As with the 97 GS the 02 oil consumption went up considerably after 50k miles if run at sustained high rpm.
The carbs went untouched all the way on both bikes except to take them loose and hang them over the side on the throttle cables on the 02 while pulling the head for the valve/bucket replacement. :thumb: I expect 80-100k relatively trouble free miles from a small air cooled mc engine and got it from the GSs.

I think thats what everyone has been doing :)
I got mine with 20k km's on it andI have put 30k km's on it with no trouble except a small leak from the left side engine cover but I have been told to learn to love the small oil leak :P
