Title: Front brake pad rubbing after fork spring swap.
Post by: andymach23 on April 25, 2014, 01:21:51 PM
Hi Everyone.

I got my 98 GS500 a year ago and having been really enjoying it, except for the poor front suspension.
Cue, Hagon progressive springs which I fitted yesterday. Vast improvement.

I took the fork tubes out and removed the caliper to to do the job and on reassembly have now got a brake pad binding that is leaving a visible track on the disk. The wheel spins a couple of times but I am getting a continual grinding noise that I can hear when riding at slow speed.

Could I have a slight alignment issue with the fork tubes maybe?

Should the spacer in the right fork tube where the pinch bolt is, be free moving? Does the outer surface of the spacer need grease?

I think that this spacer was maybe tight on reassembly. I have taken a few photos of the disk and either side of the wheel and also the inner side of the caliper.  Also included a gratuitous bike pic. :)

It would be grateful if you could tell me  if this all looks OK? I think the spacer on the right fork tube  looks like it is sticking out too much, but am not sure.

I took the pads out and checked them and there is nothing stuck on the face. I also gave the caliper a good clean.

Cheers, Andy

That spacer sleeve under the pinch bolt on the right leg is to provide a final adjustment to compensate for all the accumulated part tolerances in the axle and fork assemblies so the fork tubes don't bind.  When it's all together you should loosen the pinch bolt and bounce it up and down a few times and retighten it.  The amount it's sticking out could be causing some binding of the caliper not allowing it to move far enough to provide clearance, see how it is after you readjust the sleeve.

Spacer at pinch bolt on lower right should be free to move until you have things together then tighten it down as a last thing you do.
That lets the forks be straight and allows for any variation in how the stuff on the axle was assembled.

To let the forks be straight the way they want to be, my order for tightening things is:
1. Forks in triples
2. Axle bolt
3. Pinch bolt on right tube
4. Fork brace.

Not uncommon for the pads to run a little after a reassembly. They will wear in with some use.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the advice.  I'll have a go at the suggestions in the morning and report back.

That's it now sorted. Happy days

Thanks again for the advice. Now I can give my new springs a good test.  :)
