Title: Flashing red light
Post by: ParkerMax on April 26, 2014, 07:44:44 AM
Hey ladies and gents

The red oil light flickers sometimes when I stop at the lights, would this mean that I need to top up my oil?

Cheers

you should always check your oil level before riding.

If full check your oil pressure.

Weekly when new with low mileage and daily when old with high mileage.  If you're taking a long high speed trip with an older high mileage GS twice a day might be wise.  Running low on oil is a fatal mistake for a GS engine, too many here have had that happen

Hi parkermax,

The light is flashing indication low oil pressure. If it only ever flashes at a low idle it would indicate that it is not a wiring issue, that would be random.
Your switch might be faulty, would need an oil pressure gauge to test.
What oil viscosity are you using and what is the ambient temperature?
If pressure is too low generally it means that the crankshaft or camshaft (less likely) bearings are worn and need to be replaced but there can be many other possibilities that would need to be checked first.
Chances are often that a next thicker oil will do the job, at least temporarily.
And yeah, oil should be checked every ride on a gs.
