I've been a GS rider for a few years now and have used this site for various issues that have arisen, but never anything major..until now.
I have a '93 GS500E that was running a little rough last fall before I winterized it. Spring now and I have been trying to get it back up and running.
Here's the issue: The bike would not start without the choke fully opened and even once warmed up, any load while in gear would cause it to bog and die. So, I took apart the carbs and sure enough the idle jets were clogged and one main. Scrubbed them all out put it back together again (finding a small crack in the res fuel line in the process). Bike starts up no problem and choke can be off and still run. Great, one problem solved.
The other, not so much. In neutral I can rev the engine and it will be fine, however when in first or above and I rev (with load now on engine...) it will bog and die unless I back off. My thoughts are either the carbs are not as clean as I thought or there is a pinched fuel line...not enough fuel is getting to where it needs to be... I am in the process of re-cleaning the carbs and checking my float height, but all the tubes seem to be fine.
I also checked the engine/carb boots for any leaks (wd40) and there doesnt seem to be any.
I would appreciate any advice or direction on what I might be doing wrong or what I should check next.

Don't get me wrong, but you stored it with a full tank of fuel, right? Otherwise I could imagine some rust inside the fuel system causing your issues.
yep. full tank of gas with stabil. Checked the tank and it looks fine. When draining the floats no particulates either.
How is it with out the air filter in it ?

When under load, do you seem to bog at a higher rpm in 1st, and progressively lower and lower in the higher gears ?
If so, you may have a rip in a diaphragm or a crack in the top or some thing causing a leak between the 2.
Not the O ring which is also in the top, the diaphragm to top isn't sealing.

took the air filter off and its the same.
I had a look at the diaphragms of the carb and both are fine, no tears, but yeah buddha, the rpm is progressively worse and worse each time I use go up in gear. 1st is almost completely fine, except full open will still bog. 2nd half and 3rd at a quarter.
I will look for any other cracks but nothing was obvious.
Any thoughts?

Hey everyone, I thought I would repost to close the loop on this post. I brought the bike into the shop and it appears that the problem was the two rubber o rings on the float needle. The were slightly degraded so gas kept filling up the bowl above the set float height.
As a recommendation to others, if you are having the issue I had it is easier (and cheaper) to buy new rubber or parts for your carbs and try replacing it yourself.
