Title: Strange tick in left cylinder
Post by: pomme123 on April 30, 2014, 10:17:35 PM
Ok guys. So I went out for a nice ride today to enjoy this beautiful weather and I noticed a small issue. On deceleration using the engine to slow down I hear a strange knocking. While on the bike I couldn't determine what side it was on. I got home just a minute ago. Put it on its centre. Put it in gear and let her run. I went down and listened to both sides of the engine and I'm hearing a consistent ticking noise coming from the left side. I was wondering if you guys have ever encountered this and what you reckon the issue is. Is it easily fixable. I've done about 3.5k kms since the last service where they did a valve check. Video follows.

Sounds like a tappet to me. Were any adjustments made or were they just checked? I don't think that it is anything of concern.

It was adjusted. They were out by quite a bit apparently. What's a tappet?

Tappet is an old fashioned word for valve clearance. It is still relevant in cases where rockers are used (many Hondas and some others). Is it possible that the noise has been there since the adjustment and you have just not noticed it?

This bike will more clack when the valves are in the high end of the spec.
You should isolate if it is top or bottom.

Then isolate it more ...

Your starter and all the related junk, as well as the alternator and its related parts are all lower left ... valves are obviously top left ...

Cool.

Ok so now it is definite thud everytime I decelerate or change hears. Found out I have a oil leak (a quick one at that) and found that I've ridden more that 200kms with below low oil. I've put in 1l of 15w50 and a tube of moly to try to alleviate the issue and resolve some of the knocking. So far no dice. I'm worried about riding it so I'm out of action now. Gonna take it to the shop tomorrow to get it looked at but what do u guys think it could be? Still sounds as though it's coming from the top left. I'll take another video tonight when I get the chance.

I've explained what has happened to the bike to a mate and he's saying that it could be the piston slapping. Is that an expensive fix for this bike.

Here's a video(basically just audio) of the issue. If you listen after every rev you can hear a knock. Now imagine that continuous on deceleration and changing gears.
