Title: Fork rebuild
Post by: cole on May 09, 2014, 01:03:43 PM
Just wondering if there is a fork rebuild kit. Mine haven't been touched in 37K and have been really putting off replacing my springs and while there the fork oil, seals and whatever else may be included (Fork  boots!). The dealer quoted me a ridiculous amount to do it right and that's not including my springs and boots; it's a $150.00 in labor (2 hours) and it would be $450-ish to replace all that's necessary for both forks.

What is actually necessary to be changed, I checked via BikeBandit and some parts are discontinued which is disconcerting. Would replacing just the seals and rings, oil and springs be fine? I don't want any other parts to be an issue later on and don't want to replace parts needlessly. Inspecting parts isn't an option as I need a fast turn around time - my daily.

Also straight rate springs for our bikes seem to be dwindling in supply, dealer couldn't locate one in their network and I had to look pretty hard.

Thanks, part numbers or diagram would be ideal.

And a glass(!) of 4Roses - Single Barrel for all.

Look on the Sonic Springs website - Rich Desmond sells straight rate springs in different weights and come highly recommended.  Aside from springs, you're looking at fork seals and dust boots. Unless something is damaged, there's nothing else to replace.

Search on YouTube for a video from BaltimoreGS about how to do forks. It's fairly easy to do it yourself.

Are the seals leaking? If not, don't mess with them, just replace the springs and oil. If you give me your weight and a description of the riding you do I can recommend a rate.

If they are leaking, at 37k miles you replace the the bushings too. I don't know what year your bike is, but from the '01 parts fiche at http://www.ronayers.com/FRONT-DAMPER-C156254.aspx (http://www.ronayers.com/FRONT-DAMPER-C156254.aspx) it's part #3, 51167-01D00 METAL, SLIDE

The labor price your dealer quoted is fair, not quite sure where the $300 in parts is it doesn't included springs and boots. Springs and oil alone are easy to do yourself, seals and the other bits are more involved if you don't have much mechanical experience.

x2 on Sonic Springs.

If you can sync carbs you can rebuild your forks. Allocate two days for spring and oil replacement, three days if you replace fork seals.

You probably won't need that much time, but it is your DD, and you don't want to be up the creek without a paddle if you break a bolt or something,
