Title: Where to buy piston rings?
Post by: Watcher on May 16, 2014, 02:38:37 PM
As per title.

I have nearly everything I need to rebuild my GS500, but I can't seem to find any piston rings that fit my needs.

I can find the stock rings, but I doubt they will work for me as I am getting the cylinders bored.  I'd need some slightly oversized ones (size needed to be determined), but all I can find are piston/ring sets that are 0.5 over and I don't think I need to go that much bigger.

I just want to clean up the cylinder walls and throw it back together with the stock pistons.  If I don't have to buy new pistons it's just more $$ I don't have to spend.  Can I get 0.25 rings?

Suzuki supplies 0,5 and 1 mm overbores, but no 0,25 IIRC.
Why not go 0,5 mm? It won't make too much of a difference.

EDIT: I think you can still use the stock pistons with that ring size, but somebody will need to confirm this.

Well, I can't even find just the rings.  It's always a ring/piston set, and I have a very limited income right now.

If I can get away with just rings and no pistons then $60 beats $170.

Any idea how much larger I can get away with on the stock size rings?

Have you considered looking for a low milage cylinder block and piston set on eBay?

This might be your best bet.  0.25mm over will add 1.57 mm to the end gap, which I'm fairly certain will put you out of the service limit for stock rings.

That being said...I'm not sure just "cleaning up" the cylinder walls and honing will give you .25mm over.  You might get away with stock rings, which I see available at online dealers for a little over $30 per cylinder without pistons.

All the jugs+pistons I see on eBay + a set of new stock rings costs about the same as I can find oversize pistons+rings for, so I' rather just stick with my stock cylinders.

Here's where I'm at on the bore/hone, the family I work for has an old family friend that's been building motors for them for years and he currently has my cylinders.  He said at first glance "I don't know if these will clean up, they might, but we won't know until we try it," so if they will clean up I'll just be buying stock rings but if they need to be bored I need to know how much over to bore them.
Still waiting to hear back but as soon as he calls with a yes or no then I know where to go from there.

What is the service limit for stock rings?  It might be in my best interest just to bore it out regardless, I didn't put an internal diameter mic to it before I sent it out but the walls looked like they have seen better days.
