Title: Confusing idle
Post by: thebigtuna on May 17, 2014, 06:18:21 PM
So the other day I rode about 200 or so miles on the highway and bike was fine before that. I stopped at a gas station and my bike was idling at like 1k and wouldn't go up but didn't seem to die just sounded like it was about to. Went for a ride today and same thing. Didn't really seem to want to sit at the 1.5k I had it set at before the ride and I haven't changed the screw. Any ideas? I also have the problem with it shooting up to like 3k but I just chalked that up to hanging idle because it's not a new thing and figured eventual rejet would fix that

Shooting up to 3k sounds like an intake leak.
How warm was the engine when you set the idle to 1.5k? If you didn't ride for at least half an hour before doing it, than it wasn't completely warm, and the 1k after the highway riding is your real idle.

The idle has been set at 1.5k for weeks before this ride. Then after 2hrs or so of riding I came to a stop light and noticed it was low. So I thought It was low gas so I filled up and it kept happening. Then yesterday I noticed it again. Where would this intake leak be? I know I need to change the gasket soon when I do the valve adjustment. The header bots holding the exhaust to the engine are pretty rusted you saying that could be it?

Also I noticed to day it doesn't really like the highway and all the extra wind associated when trying to go faster on the highway. So I assume it's a leak somewhere just gotta find where

Apart from the low idle, a leak sounds about right. Spray some WD-40 around the carb boots with the engine running, and listen to RPM changes to confirm.
You can spray some around the header bolts, too, or:

Start it up, put hands close to the exhaust manifold ports, see if you feel a puff or not. If you feel air you have an exhaust leak, no air, no leak.

I don't know what the low idle could be caused by but that can be a second thought because most times at a stop it seems to rise high more often. Can I use carb cleaner instead of wd-40?

I wouldn't, it may harm plastic/rubber components.

carb cleaner will not hurt the intake boots, use the straw and use little squirts to look for leaks.
Also consider that you may have a cyl head gasket leak.
