Title: Is this how the bike should sound?
Post by: johnnys11 on May 18, 2014, 12:55:47 PM
Here is a video of my bike warmed up. Sounds like I may have an exhaust leak? It's an 04 gs500 with the jardine

Sounds unusually "thumpy" from the header area, but smartphones don't capture sound well.

When the Jardine was installed, did you just cut off the stock muffler or did you unbolt the headers from the cylinder head?

The ... Ummm ... 'Chif chif' sound? ... If it's from front then likely slightly loose bolt/nut/stud or leaky exhaust gasket? ... Take care with the bolts ... The engine metal is NOT hardcore strong!

... If it's from back ... Then the restrictor plug is out of the jardine? ... No matter what anyone does with a gs500 exhaust I don't think it's ever gonna sound like a 1000cc grumble.. Whether 4cyl or V Twin ... It's always going to sound just a little bit VW Bug  :icon_rolleyes: ;) :thumb:

Start it up, put hands close to the exhaust manifold ports, see if you feel a puff or not. If you feel air you have an exhaust leak, no air, no leak. Tighten everything down but don't crank it down. It is tractoring which tells me it has a leak. It shouldn't sound that way.

I'm getting new gaskets and gonna go from there.
The jardine was how I bought the bike. Can anyone tell if the headers are stock or jardine?

Not really.  You won't be able to get that kind of sound out of a 2-cylinder engine no matter what you do.

It'll always sound like a twin, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.  I personally prefer the sound of a twin to a 4-cyl.  Yours definitely doesn't sound "good", though, something is up but I don't know what.  Others know better than I.

Looks to me like that was a full system, not just a muffler.  The headers are definitely not stock.
