Title: 1989 GS500E Race bike
Post by: gavimoto on May 28, 2014, 12:35:44 AM
G'day from New Zealand !! Just bought an old GS500E  that I'm looking at racing in our Pre 89 class.
Still waiting for it to arrive from the transporter, but have been busy on Ebay getting stuff together for when it arrives.
The one thing I'm not too sure about is a rear shock. Does a GSXR600 rear shock fit? Anyone know the length of the standard shock? So far have ordered Race Tech springs, Emulators, Factory Pro jet kit and K&N filter to replace the standard one. Is the exhaust system one piece or can a slip on muffler be made to fit? Rearsets ... whats a good option for these? GSXR ones fit? Any particular year?
Will post up photos etc once the build starts.

Hi, From what I can tell you will need to grind the inner part of your swing arm as the spring with hit it at full compression. I would say if you can get a katana 750 rear shock (newer the better just due to wear) It is fully adjustable and bolts right in, just need to find a place to mount the reservoir. I just installed a katana 600 rear shock for the higher spring rate as being 210 in full gear does not make the stock GS500 shock to happy and it is such a difference. If you have any suspension questions message rich from sonic springs, he is super helpfull

As far as rear sets go, nothing from another bike will bolt right up that i know of without any modification. Patrick had gimbel rear sets on almost everyone of his bikes, and when i rode junior i was amazed at how aggressive they were, would be great for the track, if you are shorter. I'm excited to see where this build goes. Good luck on future progress.

rear sets are pretty simple to make if you have some one that can cut brackets for you and you can do some simple threaded rods and clevis

Yes, it will need a  bit of work  8)
By the way, what is the K & N lunch box that folks refer to?

This is my other race bike that lives in the garage.
Its also a Suzuki four stroke, but its a FXR150

Started life as per above, but now has been heavily modified as a race bike.
41mm GSXR250 forks, 2.5" front rim 3.0" rear, Honda RS125 fairing and tail, 28mm flatside carb, modded 2mm o/s Wiseco 12.5CR piston for a 250 Ninja, ported cylinder head, tapered exhaust header pipe with lightweight alloy race muffler, runs on Avgas, 125GP slick tyres. NSR250 clipons etc

Why didn't we ever get awesome small displacement bikes in the states...frustrating. Anyways the K&N lunchbox that people refer to is the single K&N that replaces your airbox. RU-2970 is the PN I believe.

Hmmm OK found the "lunchbox" So that complete filter replaces the airbox huh? Generally I've found that CV carbs dont like having the airbox replaced with pod filters, but maybe the bulk of that filter makes up for it. At this stage I will keep the airbox and have ordered a K&N direct replacement to fit. May look at replacing the CV's with some flatslide carbs in the future.

Woohoo, my bike finally arrived this morning at 6.30am, it was still so dark couldnt really see too much, pushed it into the garge. Hmmm, seems a bit hard to push, could be flat tyres, worn wheel bearings, knackered chain. Remember it has been sitting for quite some time, oh yeah and no brakes either, oh well, was planning on stripping them anyway. Close the garage and off to work for the day. A couple of well timed courier deliveries sees my Race Tech springs and Race Tech emulaters turn up as well, woohoo.
Anyway get home tonight and check a bit closer, oops forgot to take photos, but will do. First impressions, hmmm its pretty rusty ...
Wonder if it goes? Key on and dead as a dodo. Pop teh seat off, remove the old battery and fit a new Motobatt MB10U battery. We have lightssss  O0 Hit the starter and it turns over but doesnt fire. Hmmm, wonder how old this fuel is? Add some fresh gas and try again and eventually it kicks into life after fiddling with the fuel tap positions. Hmmm, doesnt sound too bad at all considering its got nearly 100, 000 kms on the clock! Next up decide to fit the new replacement K&N filter, hmmm, OMG whats with this tank setup? Everything I had read was true, this fuel tap, fuel hose setup has gotta go !! Eventually get the old filter out and pop the new K&N in and restart the bike. Cool, sounds better already, attempted to refit the tank, but think first off I'll replace some of the old brittle fuel hose with some fresh hose and look at replacing all that guff there too.  :D

Right time for bit of an update!
Forks have been sorted with new seals, race tech springs and gold valve emulators.
Goodridge braided brake line, Vortex clip ons, MotoGP style lever protectors, and Piazzo style shorty levers.
Messed around with the standard carbs and air box for a bit but ended up buying some 33mm Keihen CR Special smoothbores fitted with velocity stacks. Found some rear sets on ebay from out of China, and also recently bought a new YSS rear shock.
Last things to do are bleed the brakes and a bit of safety wiring to get it track ready. Hopefully have it on the track by the end of the month!  O0
