Title: someone please help me quick! .i have an extra hose dont know where it SOLVED
Post by: garyg199 on May 29, 2014, 10:51:28 AM
Trying to put my bike back together after carb cleaning and I have an extra hose coming from gas tank that's seperate from the petcock on the tank! Also I had an extra one on a middle t connection on the air filter side of the carbs but ibfigured out that it was a vent and just hangs there?

Someone help quick!

That extra hose on the tank is the tank vent/overflow.  It travels down to the right side of the bike next to the rear brake pedal.  See it on this pic right next to the airbox drain hose.

That middle 'T' on the carb you mentioned... that is a vent for the carb.  You should route that over the airbox (avoid covering the air filter inlet), and tuck it between the airbox and battery OUT OF ANY POSSIBLE WIND.

Both of these hose you don't want to kink or pinch, otherwise you will have fuel starvation issues.

Thanks bboy I did actually hook it up that way but ibapprecitare you confirming it for me.

Kinda worried. .. got everything back together right (I think) and the bike wouldn't start. Now I watched a video that said after having the carbs and everything out that it will crank for a while before she starts. Is that what's most likely happening or could something have gone wrong? Carbs are definitely getting gas and I'm 99% sure I put everything together correctly.

Are there any tricks or tips to get it to start? Anything I'm supposed to do after carb cleaning and reassembly? Also my battery dies very quickly from trying to start it so I got frustrated after the fourth or fifth time trying to crank it and put her away.

I did get a charger tho so ya think I should charge the battery a while and then just crank away?

Thanks

Make sure to use full choke, and put the petcock on prime before starting for the first time.

Thanks man.

Uhhh so yeah I took the battery out to charge it and the charger said it was charged good. 12.3-12.4 volts? I don't understand why the bike won't start though. I thought the battery had died because it started to crank slower and slower until it died and would just click. But I guess it could have charged back up over night.

I also didn't crank it long enough . Only tried a few Times before I got fed up. This is normal? I had a little trouble starting it prior to the carbs being out but I could eventually start it.

Battery needs a minimum of 12.6V to start the GS500.  Its a little deceiving because they are '12V' batteries, but a 12V battery is normally 13-14V, a very good battery will be more like 14.2V. You do need to charge your battery, they won't recover on their own.  Just to make sure, as I've seen many new folks have it backwards... but choke ON is lever up, choke OFF is lever down.

Oh it does?! See I was nervous about charging it because it was at about 12.3 and was going up to 13 so I shut it down in fear of ruining it. Also it must not be holding a charge because the meter was showing it dropping when I stopped the actual charging. I guess the charger would stop at 13/14 volts then? Also as soon as I put it back on and tried to staart it...it's like I can only get 2-3 tries cranking it before it just clicks. I don't get what's going on man. My right carb isn't getting gas and I can't get it started because the friggin battery dies so quick. So frustrating!

I don't get why it's cranking slower too. Should I adjust the mixture screws? Where are they located?

Sounds like the float is stuck... knock on the side that's stuck with something - maybe the end of a screwdriver... see if that get anything to flow out the drain.

Combine the lower battery with no gas in one carb... I would actually be surprised if it started.  Charge the battery overnight, an hour won't cut it.  Slow cranking and clicking is still the battery.  Voltage is only one part of the equation with power you need to start the bike.  The charger should regulate it from overcharging and keep it topped once its fully charged.

Okay cool so I can definitely leave it to charge and nothing will happen to it?

Well... Most any charger made within the last ten years (probably longer) is designed to stop charging once its full.  So in order to not mislead you, you should look up your specific charger and see how it supposed to work and what it is designed for.
