Title: Broken Speedo
Post by: chacenger on May 30, 2014, 03:42:02 PM
One morning this week I noticed my speedo wasn't working. It had worked the night before on the ride home. I ordered a new cable and tested it, still no speed reading. The odometer and trip meter has also not been working. Is there a special technique to use when installing the cable which would have caused the new cable not to work or is it my dial that's the problem? I've read a bit Ito the dials breaking but from what I've seen it seems that the odometer wouldn't necessarily stop working along with the speedo. Any help would be appreciated!

Matt

No special technique required when installing a cable....if it fits it's good.
The last 2" of the cable sould NOT be lubricated.
Sounds like u need a New/2nd hand speedo. There use to be places that repair speedos but their rare now(not cost effective)
ebay.

Your mileage is going to be off from replacing the speedo, might be able to pop the glass off and adjust the new one, and or use a drill.

I hand-twisted my speedo cable and the needle moved so I'm doubtful that the issue is the dial. Now I am thinking the part on the wheel that converts the wheel's turning motion into a twist of the cable. Anyone have experience with the part breaking?

Hi. I have a functioning speedo with a broken casing. I can sell you it, if you need it, for £15 plus postage. I live in York u.k :D

frowned upon unfortunately. plus it will get the rings err lines between them. well it should anyways. lets future folks know its been played with. a few options here. when  you replace it, take a picture of both side by side. ( old one installed)  to document it. cause if you forget it becomes a TMU. which is a bugger. ( TMU = true mileage unknown )

Can true mileage ever be known? :icon_lol:
In an ideal world, maybe, would be cool though.

for sure my friend lol. this helps when selling bike,  cause of loans or whatever. a TMU flucks a title up. the picture helps avoid a TMU

Thanks for the help guys. Turns out it was the cable after all. I don't know why the first cable didn't fix the problem but the second try did. I'm happy with that relatively cheap fix!
