Ok I need some help. Here is what I have done to my bike
1) cleaned my carbs
2) installed an inline fuel filter
3) winterized it (changed oil and filter put stabil in the tank, lubed the piston, removed battery)
4) changed my clutch assembly and plates
I started it in the garage after I got the whole bike back together after changing the clutch pu the battery back in and tried to start it. it started but ran really rough and then went with full choke on the rpm's went up and after a little bit I backed the choke off it ran still the idol felt rough to me. I twisted the trottle and nothing happened then it sputtered and almost died I backed off the throttle and it continued to idol then I twisted the throttle again and it died. I started it back up and twisted the throttle slowly it sputtered i backed it off and cranked it slowly the bike sputtered and then backfired and the rpm's shot up. this is what it did every time I cranked it after that. Also it appears that the bike is burining oil and blueish gray smoke was billowing from my exaust at first i thought it was just the oil i used to lube the piston buring off but it never burned off.
any thoughts would be appreciated
How do you lube the piston?
I may of misspoke I took out the spark plug and poured in a teasspoon of oil and then moved the wheel (I didn't have any fogging oil)
i am assuming this didnt do that before?(smoke), keep running it, see if smoke goes away or dissipates, also keep an eye on your oil level :thumb:
Check out the choke cable, make sure it is snug.
Check out the float Boats (you maybe flooding the carbs/ engine)
Check out the throtle cable, make sure it is snug.
If it's backfiring you are dispelling unburned fuel. The smoke is probably from the oil. Next time use a tea spoon of 2 stroke oil. It is made to burn with the gass. Good luck to ya.

You might want to pull your spark plugs and check their condition... If you tried to start it soon after pouring in the oil, you might have fouled one. A side question-- could WD-40 be considered a fogging oil? I read somewhere a long time ago that before you put one up for the winter, spray some into the airbox while it's running to fog the exhaust system. Of course, if you have SS pipes and mufflers, that's a moot point... :cheers:
I had the exact same problem one spring after the bike had sat for a long time. I ended up taking the carbs completely apart to clean them. I didn't find anything but when I put them back on, the bike ran perfect.
I think what happened was that the floats got stuck after the gas dried out. The remaining varnish made the floats stick.
Just make sure that gas is getting to the floats. Put the petcock on prime and open the drain plug on each carb (catch the gas with a container).
Otherwise I guess check that you are getting spark an that the plugs are clean.
