Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and I ride and 04 gs500f, but the engine now has a bent rod so I need to find a new engine so I can do a swap.
I was just wondering 1) where would be the best place to find one 2) What other engines will fit the frame and 3) If anyone has one they are looking to get rid of?

Haha! Shepa and CBRfxr have both done some crazy stuff....
But many of the older GS Twins will fit pretty easy (GS400, GS450, etc) and a GR650 will "fit" with some motor mount modifications......but the GR is rare. I've seen a 2 stroke RD400 in a GS500 frame too.
Is there any engine that would be a slight upgrade in size that would fit easy? I wouldn't mind some extra power haha ;)I would be getting a mechanic to do it, because I don't know how to much.. :confused:

Rod and up you can actually fix with pretty good success. You lose the crank or CB bearings - that is adios.

The motor that Shepa has is from a cbr600, cant remember what model, maybe f4i? I cant see the picture that is apparently there hahaha. The easiest would be just getting a stock motor and putting it in yourselves. Getting a mechanic to do all the work would involve a tonnnn of labor. And you would probably need to take it to a customs shop, not any old shop. But more power too you, Shepa did an awesome job, talk to him.

For a guy that knows barely anything about how to take it apart and put a new one in, how hard/difficult would it be for me to learn and do it? Is it complicated?
I'm just worried ill screw it up somehow
A direct motor swap is rather simple, just time consuming.
Rebuilding a motor is where you can get into trouble.
If you have a good set of metric sockets and metric Allen keys you should be able to swap a motor....not 100% Allen keys are required.

If your bike has any rust, the biggest problem you'll run into is hammering out the mounting bolts that keep the engine and frame together. The large one in the front has a tendency to get seized all to hell.
If rust isn't an issue, it's really quite simple to change out a motor. If you want to put in a CBR motor, though, get ready to custom fab a lot of stuff.
Be gentle, sometimes they really stick!

+1 to Jack. I got an 89 motor for free because of seized motor mounts. The bike was bought as a project for cheap, but the motor mounts had to be cut off the frame.....and that was the end of that project!
Do it your self! It's totally worth it, I'm not mechanically inclined at all and me and a friend swapped the motor and got it running in 1 day!
