Well as the title states, if you saw my g500e restore post I have a tank dilemma here. My tank has a leak along the right seam and a fairly decent size hole in the left inside panel of the tank. Does anyone have a tank which is in decent shape, I have been looking for a while and cannot find one on ebay etc...
Thanks
Philipp
Still looking for an 89-00 tank for my gs500e... she is just sitting there feeling somewhat naked now :)

Without the tank...... That's like Ultra-Naked ! :D
It's funny. Sometimes you look on ebay and see a bunch of 89-00 tanks and other times, there are none around. I'm always on the lookout locally / craigslist etc for a parts bike "just in case". It seems like there are plenty of parts around.... except when you actually need one.... then it's like trying to find a unicorn.
Is it possible to find a newer tank and seat to go with it and go that route? Pretty sure people use newer tanks. (I'm guessing the "side plastic" would then have to be replaced as well / may not look right... so I guess that's not really an option...??
I have one but you are on the other side of the planet :(
You can use any tank from any GS, I have the newer tank on my 90 model BUT you need to fabricate a bracket to hold the front of the side panels on if it bothers you.
You DO NOT need to change the seat or anything else.

Will the old style seat "touch" the new style tank?? I'm guessing there would just be a little gap due to the different shape of the rear of the tank? Just curious. I never really thought about it. Fabricating some mounting points for the front of the plastic looks to be a pretty easy project.
Maybe finding a newer tank would be a possibility for Philipp.

Cool.
For some reason, looking at the parts diagrams, I always thought the center portion of the newer tank (where your tank protector is), was a bit "steeper" (If that makes sense). It looks pretty darn similar to the old style tank with the exception of the "grooves" for the new style seat to go around it. That doesn't look too bad at all.
Unless you were told you would never know my tank was not the original shape when looking at the bike in person :)

Agreed. Other than the portion of the tank where the original (newer style) seat "wraps around", they look identical. In fact, the side fairings line up pretty darn nice with the the new style tank in that lower area designed for the seat to wrap around. Looks great.
Damn thanks codajastal that does look good. The bracket you mention do you mean the one that mounts the tank to the frame? Also will the side panels still mount to the tank this way? I'd like to keep the parts to the gs500e era but... if this is my last resort its my last resort... its killing me not to ride :( this bike after all the restoration etc that was done (its under the builds category)
I found the thread with the how-to for this.

I believe the only thing you would have to fabricate (if you want to) is the mounts for the front portion of the side plastic. (If you look at your original tank, it has 2 tabs that extend down and this is what the male portions of the side fairings attach to).
In fact, you'll find a lot of naked GS500's with the front male portions of the side fairings broken and you really don't know it. They stay on just fine. The side plastic will stay on without the front tabs. They have slight movement but it really doesn't cause a problem. You could always fabricate something to hold the front of your original fairings as codajastal mentions if it really bothers you..
Thanks for the link bombsquad, that is very helpful i wonder if a clamp style bracket would allow me to mount the side plastics properly if i have to choose a 2001+ tank.

Just on a side note, I DID NOT fabricate ANY mounts for the side panels, They really do not need them as they sit snugly enough and your legs keep them in while riding.
All I did was put the tank on and bolt it down the same way as the other does.
Hmmm interesting from the way you describe it that should be a pretty simple process then. I like the How-to thread too, your an awesome help thanks.
