I got my Dainese used off ebay for around $40, in excellent condition though. Most are very similar in design and protection. Technic, Knox are a couple of other good brands, I don't recall some of the others.

I recently bought a dainese summer back protector (same as your link, but with only one thin waist strap) and it goes great under my jacket. Depending how tall you are, it may take a little bit of work to find the placement such that you don't interfere with your helmet, but it's worth it.
Mine is very comfortable, but even better is the knowledge I have more than foam protecting my spine.

I forgot to mention...mine has the thin 1" waist strap as well. I attached a lifting safety belt to it (similar to the one listed in the auction link) and it works great. Helps keep it in place and provides the extra support for those long rides. Especially since I have an open vertebra in my lower back.

I recently picket up a Teknic 4-plate protector from NewEnough (25 bucks..   ).  Unfortunately, they were out of the full 7-plate protectors by the time I got the cash scrounged for it  :x .  I decided to go for it anyway 'cause I could use the lower back support for longer rides.  Anyway... what do you guys thing of the lower-back protectors like the Teknic 4-plate.  ... think the 4-plate is enough? or did I waste 25 bucks?

i looked into the Teknic 4/7 plated ones...they seem weak to me...and if i'm buying a back protector...i'd go for a full back one

Any protector will be better than nothing or the flimsy foam pad included with most leather suits & jackets. I prefer the full protector that covers the tailbone as well.

I agree that any back protector is better than none at all. The one you posted looks like it extends to the tailbone - very important. I have a Bohn protector, so I can't give you insight to the specific one you posted, but mine also has adjustable straps and a velcro waist band, and I like both of those features.

The only thing I'd check is that it's not "just foam" cuz you already have that in your jacket. Make sure it's not to thick in profile or you might not be comfortable. And if you don't wear it, it's useless.

Here's link to a pretty good discussion on the topics, found on the WERA roadracing bulletin board.
