Title: oil consumption, again)
Post by: deniskin on June 19, 2014, 12:45:50 PM
Hello all

I own GS500E 01` model K1 that comes only 31000 km

Have some question about engine oil consumption

now my engine consumes ~500g in quiet ride 3500-5500rpm, and up to1000g in active ride 5000-8000rpm
i try change Repsol10w40 on 15w50 same brand but no any difference in oil consumption

it`s really nornal for our engine?

spark plugs have ideal "brown" color, exhaust no have signs of smoke and engine starts very light

What's the time frame here? If it consumes that much within an afternoon, you have a problem... Within an oil change interval? Completely normal. Of course there are levels between the 2  :)

do you have smoke coming out of the exhaust?

to test this is I started it up cold and ran her for about a minute.

After that I got a few paper towels folded them up in a square and held that square over the exhaust for a few seconds.

I then looked at the paper towel. If you see black engine oil could be a piston ring problem. I took apart my engine with Patrick (adidasguy) and that problem disappeared

We need a time frame. Air cooled engines will always burn oil over an oil change interval. But if that happens in a single ride that's waaaaay too much, especially with 15w50 oil.

Mine was burning a bit too much for my liking but after switching to 20w50 that problem is gone.

Just curious... What brand of 20/50 are you using?
