Title: will it win ?
Post by: madhatter on February 03, 2004, 03:38:19 PM
A uk motorcycle mag is running an 8hour endurance race , the basis is three suzuki's,  bike 1. R G V 250, bike 2 (87) GSX-R 400, bike 3 GS500E,
all are well used and abused and the winner is the bike that completes the most laps over 8hours.
so what do you think ???

GSX-R400 should win.  The GS will CHEW up oil and die (unless thay tip it off when they pit).

Interesting point about the oil, I dunno, Honda CB500s have a 24 hrs endurance thing at LeMans ans about four years ago all 22 bikes (thereabouts) managed to finish. Having seen the abuse that 250s soak up I rather fancy the little bike myself.

Which magazine is doing that test?  That seems like a cool comparison.  My bet is on the GSXR as well.

A wee little standard vs. 2 pint sized sport bikes?  :?

But have a little faith guys! Assuming they don't over rev and float the valves on the poor little GS, I would bet it would last to the end. The one thing a GS would have going for it is a bigger tank/better fuel economy (assuming the engine is in good shape) and it will be easier on its tires than either an RGV or mini-GSXR.

JamesG.....
what fuel econ do you get????
At WFO, i get about 20mpg at the track.
i'll go with the GSXR making more laps

the GS will finish but the gsxr should accel quicker out of the turns..more laps in given time

if the RG-V isn't tooo whipped it will finish ahead of the GS also

Title: GS500 should take it

The GS500 will last the entire race on one set of tires and will go the longest between fuel stops.  The engines were known to last multiple seasons of endurance racing as long as the oil was changed every race.  As long as they keep it on two wheels they have the best chance.  The GS team has more money left over for spare levers, used after market exhaust, or rework the front springs, etc.

The RGV will stick a piston and / or burn up tires requiring pit stops that will let the GS make another 2 laps or more per tire swap.

The GSXR400 - don't know enough about it but to make an educated guess.  Put personal thoughts are that it is too spindley to make it as long as the GS in race conditions.
