Title: Oil Leak!
Post by: Paragon109 on July 08, 2014, 08:00:15 PM
Ok... So... I changed my oil and filter on the 4Th of July. I was in a bit of a rush and didn't measure my oil when I put it in (Valvoline 10W-40 full synthetic - that's all they had on hand). I've developed quite an oil leak from what appears to be coming out of my pipes or muffler and is dripping down to the weld at the lowest point and dropping off. It seems like there is something like .5 quarts above the "full" line.  :icon_eek:

Any and all advice on what to do beyond "measure your oil next time, idiot" would be appreciated. Thanks!

First things first - drain the excess oil. Try popping off the oil filter cover since oil gets held up in there, and it's not a whole lot.

Leaking oil out of the exhaust? I wouldn't think that's where the excess oil would go..... maybe somebody will correct me, but it would have to enter the cylinders from under the piston (not likely) or past the exhaust valves, and the valves should channel excess oil back down to the sump.

If its been significantly over filled then suddenly started leaking the oil may be getting blown out of the breather pipe, the one right on the top of the head, then finding the easiest way down.

...You sure it is oil and not gas, or gas/oil mixture?  It may also be possible that your carbs flooded into the cylinders and 'overfilled' your case.  Does the oil smell like gas?
