Title: indicators still not working? RESOLVED! .maybe...
Post by: garyg199 on July 10, 2014, 02:00:35 PM
So my final problem is still that my indicator cluster is not working at all. None of them work and I have noooo idea why. Someone clearly did something with the wiring cuz it's all taped up and ran around the bike.

Does anyone know where they go to from the front? Where do I check and how? I've seen the diagrams but they're not that helpful due to the bike being worked on.

Thanks a bunch

Got your Haynes manual yet? It contains full color wiring diagrams for all model years.....with the correct color wires in the diagram so you can determine what you're looking for.

Once you've got your Haynes book, grab your multimeter and figure out where the connections are broken.

I'm working on a similar problem right now too. Nothing beats a manual, multimeter, electrical cleaner, and some wire brushes.

Still didn't get one yet:/

I figured since its all worked on that the wiring was replaced anyway but I didn't know if something else could be bad like a relay or a sensor or something

If you suspect complete wiring problems, you can pick up the full wiring harness on eBay from a bike breaker like Pinwall.

But first get the necessary tools.

Pull the relay, connect the two wires in the plug together with a paperclip or something similar. Orange and light blue. If the lights then come on when you flick the switch side to side the relay is faulty.

Hey sledge can you elaborate a little on what you mean?

I'm sorry buddy I'd just like to try that and I'm not to sure what you mean. Where is the relay?

Assuming everything is standard on your bike the relay sits behind the RH side panel as shown in the pic.

Its a little black box with a plug going into its underside. You will also see the starter relay next to it but the one we want is on the left and the plug has two wires in it, light blue and orange. Pull the plug off the relay and stick a paperclip into the plug to short out the wires.

Then turn everything on and flick the indicator switch from side to side. If the relay is faulty and if there are no other faults in the system the indicator lights will come on steady on each side.

Thank you that's exactly what I was looking for!
I see where it is but I'm gonna wait until it's light out to mess with it.

I flick th he switch with the paperclip in the plug part or on the relay? And what does it mean if they don't come on when doing this? Faulty wiring/ problems somewhere along the wiring?

Thanks again

Okay I have to apologize for not being more specific.

I did not mean my blinkers I meant the neutral light..oil high beam indicators on the instrument panel. That is what I cannot get to work. None of them come on ever. Ever since I bought the bike

Bad bulbs or connector in harness then?

Yeah it's gotta be somethin dumb. I'm guessing there's not a lot that can go wrong to make them not work. The only thing that's throwing me off is the fact that the previous owner for some reason has the wiring all taped up running from the bulbs to the plug.

Also I tested one of the bulbs off of a D battery and a paperclip and it lit up fine.

I at the very least want the blinkers indicator to work because I sometimes forget my blinkers are on. So. I'm guessing that would be connected to the blinkers via connector plug as well?

So, here's my impression of where you're at....rather than shuffling down the Harbor Freight and buying a multimeter for like $10 and ordering a Haynes manual off Amazon back when we first recommended it, you're no farther along because the guys on the internet can't diagnose and correct your bike's wiring issue without any measurements, pictures, or other details besides all the wires are taped up.

I stand by my original comment however unhelpful/harsh you may think it is. Get the manual, get a multimeter, trace the existing wiring and attempt to match it up to the wiring diagrams, turn on one of the blinkers, verify you're getting electrical current back at the bulb, repeat with high beam switch, repeat with putting bike in neutral.

Don't you think if I had the time to do those things I would? If you're going to waste your time to tediously type out some bs on your phone and try to make me feel like an idiot...why even waste your finger strength.

I'm looking for someone that's had a similar experience on this forum and help with things a manual can't give me. So. Relax yourself. My bike was clearly taken apart to the fullest extent and rebuilt so I'm not looking at a stock motorcycle and it's a bit confusing.

Just trying to help you help yourself. Like you said, your bike appears to be modded in some way. Without taking a methodical approach, I would guess you'll never figure it out.

The way I see it, your only other option is to take it to your local bike shop and have them puzzle it out for you....but there's no telling how long they'll take--but you had better believe they will take an approach similar to what I described above.

Good luck trying to wish your bike fixed. :thumb:

At the very least I would say to unwrap the tape and see if there is any damage or missing connections .. It'll only cost another roll of electrical tape and a little time? ...

Without 'eyes on' the suspected problem area/s then the issue will never be isolated or discounted as 'not that bit' ...

Could even be the connector plug that's partially pulled apart enough to stop it working but looks ok from the outer case..... Which .... If the wiring is taped up in that area AND snugged up tight , remove any free play/slack in the wire/plug and put pulling tension on it.

There is no 'must be' that bit or that wire .... Until basic testing/visual identification has been done.

I've found and replaced several problems in my bike with softened and burnt/sparking wires and plugs .... It was a pain in the ass to locate a few times and mainly required me to start by sitting down on a crate beside the bike and looking/prodding/bending/multimetering sections from plug to plug or point to point to isolate the problem...... Quiet time spent looking things over is often a good thing!  :thumb:

I understand. I think I'm just making it a bigger issue then it probably is. It's just writing plugged in at different points so if it's not a power issue it's gotta be wiring. I can just sit there with a meter and check for bad reading all down the line then? Guess I'll have to do that den.

Thanks guys

If the meter is showing good power in the sockets where the bulbs go it's all good right?! Has to be the bulbs then?
Title: Re: indicators still not working?
Post by: Janx101 on July 19, 2014, 03:00:29 PM
Yeah if you have power in the sockets it's highly likely to be either the bulb filament or dirty/poor/worn bulb base ... Replacements are cheap ... Bulbs or LED units ..

A note on LED ... You can replace oil, high beam and neutral with LED without consequence ... But if you put one in the indicator spot you will need to add a wiring mod (most likely) ....

So only IF you decide to use LED!!

Depending on age of bike and what size/type LED goes in there .... The older bikes used a T10 size and they can be obtained in the right type ... Newer bikes use a T5 ... And they require the mod... A bit of a search on here will bring up multiple threads on what's required ...

If you use normal bulbs then no issues ....

Pretty sure I found the problem...all the wires snapped because the harness was mounted to the forks so when I turned the handle bars they eventually snapped. As excited as I was too fix it which I did..I was then immediately super pissed because I got them to light...and then nothing again!

Also...my battery died and my friggin blinkers all come on at once in the rear when turned to either side. That coulda happened at another time though being I can't see my back blinkers when I'm riding. Obviously.

Yes I know...the dead battery would cause the instrument panel not to light. Not the problem because I jumped it and still nothing.

What is the main power source for those lights or what could have done that?

Thanks

Battery... it happens! ... age, not used for a while, large average change in temp- ie winter to summer or vice versa, low fluids in cells. .. here's perfect chance to put a good AGM battery in! ...
All blinkers on same time in rear? ... still bad wiring join somewhere! ? .. your repaired wires should be individually taped/shielded before wrapping back up..

Fuse for not starting? .. but I think as it's 1 fuse for whole bike then it affects everything. .. so a safety relay on clutch circuit?.. if damaged that wire too before/during repairs?
