Title: Valve adjustment and cam chain check
Post by: FirstGS500E on July 18, 2014, 04:30:37 PM
Hey Folks! I'm a new guy on here. I just bought a 93 gs500e. There is some high pitch knocking goin on in the top of the engine. I will be attempting a valve adjustment this weekend. While I'm in there I want to check out the cam chain as well. I'm wondering if any of you guys know the size of the o rings that are on the four main bolts? I'd like to have replacements BEFORE I take off the cover. Also, any input or tips for this task is welcome. Thanks (ps. This bike only has about 4100 miles on it)

Hello,

Welcome to the GS500 family :)

I don't know the exact size of the rubber o-rings, but you can order them at www.bikebandit.com or at your local Suzuki dealer.

Everything you will need to know is in this video:

I just recently did a valve clearance adjustment myself on a GS500F 2005. All I can say is be careful with the fuel lines connected to the petcock.
Make sure to turn off the switch under the gas tank, and when disconnecting the fuel lines from the petcock. Be wary of the gasoline that will leak out from disconnecting the petcock.

Take a picture as you go so you remember where everything goes. Like those random dangling hoses that goes to nowhere lol.

I also downloaded the video and went step by step to do everything :)

Hey, thanks man! I found that video last week and watched it, as well as another one someone posted the link on here. Also, once I have the sizes, where can I purchase only the shim sizes I need?

Thanks again

Which state are you in? I'll try to find out for ya :)

Edit #1: I thought I ordered my shims from a place in Canada, but it is actually in the states (Marion, NY):

*Just make sure you are purchasing shims designed for Suzuki with a diameter of 29.5.

Edit #2: I see you are from Columbus, Ohio. These might be a closer options for you:
1) http://www.indmoto.com/
2) http://www.mid-ohio.com/fiche_select2.asp?category=Motorcycles&make=Suzuki&year=1993&fveh=2103
*Just give them a call or email and tell them you want Suzuki 29.5 Shim and whatever size(s) you need.

While you're in there I would consider also ordering a replacement valve cover gasket (if you haven't already).  I did my adjustment a few weeks ago and my gasket has been leaking a little bit of oil, so I'm going back in to replace my gaskets.

They tell me in my manual to replace every gasket and o-ring no matter how old they are.  I probably should have listened.

My gasket ended up being fine. Just be careful taking the cover off to make sure you dont damage the gasket. Use the sealer in the half moons and you should be fine. Also, i ordered my new shims off e-bay. Just search 29.5mm shim. It will bring them up. Had all sizes i needed, and got to me in around 3 days. That was from Cali to IL. So would be about the same for you. Good luck. It was WAY easier than i was expecting.  :thumb:

Did you take the gasket completely off of the cover, or did you leave it on?

I left it on the cover. It stayed on there just fine.

I think that's where I went wrong, because the gasket seemed in good shape before I removed it.  The video I watched said to remove and inspect the gasket, so I did and immediately regretted it when it came time to put the valve cover back on.  :technical: :technical:
