Post by: Rigo559 on July 31, 2014, 11:26:56 AM
So one morning I'm riding ....I start hearing a loud clanking sound as I accelerate ....later on realized I was low on oil.....tried to ride back home ....but clanking got louder...I lost all my power...and bike died out on me.....when I tried turning it on later....you just hear one click...now I'm attempting my first rebuild when I removed the oil pan ...I found lots of metal shavings .....WHAT COULD THIS BE???

New Engine time... Bearings are toast, and scattered everywhere.  Even with the 'wide' tolerances of the old GS500, I can't imagine much is salvageable with that amount of metal shredding about in there.  Not worth the cost/labor/time... not even close.  Used engine will cost 700 max, without searching for a deal.  That damage above will cost more in parts alone.  Replacing the engine will be far less trouble - not even a question about it.

There is plenty of info on engine swaps on this forum - you can put any year GS500 engine in that roller with little modification or none at all depending on the year.  89-00, 01-02, and 04-09 is the year breakdown for most differences, but there is very little concerning the engine.  The engine is basically the same from 89-09 - the only 'major' thing is the timing pickup - and that's a direct swap from the bum engine to the new engine IF it is even different.

The GS500 engine is a tank; however, its Achilles tendon is low oil/low lubrication situations - kills the bearings and entire bottom end when they fail - Obviously low oil on any engine is bad, but this engine is particularly vulnerable with that situation.
