So my question is, is there any real advantage to running with a choke vs. without?
I picked up a 2000 GS500 not too long ago, the PO had removed the choke and was running it like that for a while. I was running it like that as well, no real issues with it or anything. It was running fine and then started giving me some trouble. Symptoms pointed to a clogged jet or perhaps vacuum leak. I pulled the carbs off to inspect/clean/rebuild/all that good stuff. So I figured well, if there was a time to put the choke cable back on, now would be the time, but would it even be necessary? Its my first bike, and really my first experience with carbs. Any and all info welcome, thank you.
The choke is invaluable for cold weather starts,it also maintains idle after start.
Unless u had an automatic choke i wouldn't be without one.
I live in San Diego, it doesnt get too cold tbh.
I was just giving it a little throttle when turning it on, leaving the throttle open for a bit, and then just using the throttle stop screw (or idle adjust, not sure of the proper term) to raise the idle, and then lower it once warm...

Mind you it must be a bit of a pain adjusting the throttle stop screws each time you want to cold start it. (Are you sure you're adjusting the throttle stops or could it be the pilot screws you're adjusting?)
On the other hand, if I were you I'd just put chokes into the carbs. They put 'em there for good reason. You might be able to compromise some other things on a bike, but IMHO carbs just need to be RIGHT!
yea. its definitely annoying. that's the main reason I wanted to put one on, for the convenience.
would I just need a lever and cable? I have the lever and would need to buy the cable but I don't see anything else in my bag of misc. parts that looks like it'd go on the choke. or if maybe someone could post an up close picture that'd be cool too.
