Hey guys.. Gotta 91 gs500e with k&n lunch box and exhaust. I upgraded to 40 pilots and 150 mains . 1 washer, 3 turns in mixture screws.. Bike runs fantastic and idles dam near perfect.. But if I go on a drive on the freeway or go fast for a little while.. When I come to a stop idle is raised from about 1400 to 2000 and stays high.. Any ideas what could be wrong? Bike will hesitate SOMETIMES (very rarely) when floored.. Any suggestions would be great guys
That's called a hanging idle or wandering idle. Most often caused by an air leak around the intake boots between the carbs and cylinder head. Being that your bike is a 91, I'd say you have the original boots (and orings that go with them) and they need replaced.
1/4 turn out on air screw ...
You wont hover by just 500 rpm if you're sucking in air in the intake ... BTW worth testing for that too though, spray wd40 around the intake and look and see if ide goes up, my guess ... air screw.
Cool.

Your referring to the air mixture screws? One on each carb.. Turn them out to 3 1/4
?

Yes. 3 is a starting point ... good for most bikes ... but lots of bikes also like em different ... 1-2 out or 1/2-1 in depending ...
Yours calls for +1/4 more out. IMHO. (Edited - for clarity)

Ok so I turned both screws out 1/4 turn.. So far zero bogging.. But once I been driving for about 10 min.. Anytime I come to a stop after that it idles at around 2000-2200 which was my problem from before also.. Any other time it idles at about 1300... What do ya think?
You @ 3 1/4 and still have that slight hovering ?
AKA, no change from 3 turns - right ? Or has it got better, but not really much better ?
OK Intake and exhaust leaks - Did you check for those ? Make sure you're not having either of those.
I think your valves are likely OK, but overall good to make sure.
If the above 2 check out fine - Try another 1/4 turn of the air screws.

Yeah. 3 1/4 and the bogging stopped. But still high hovering idle once bike has been ridden.. It onky does it when I'm cruising around 50+ for a few min. So when the bike warms up.. Went to 3.5 turns out today and bike seemed to be hesitant and bogged once.. BUT. at 3.5 turns the idle isnt as high.. But it's still high up there.. I will check for leaks tomorow I need to grab some wd-40. Hope I can track this down.... And one.more quick.question.. I do not.know a lot about gs500 but it seems I need to rev up to.about 3-4k anytime I drive from a stop the bike starts sputtering and hesitating.. Been like this for the few months I had it.. that normal?
OK @ 3.5 idle isn't hovering as much - OK that means you are still a hair lean @ idle -
Now what does it do when you ride it @ 50 ? Does it hover then ? - hovering @ 50 would mean, it accelerates on its own @ maybe 1/4 throttle ? Very lean if that's happening - or your description isn't quite what I think it is.
OK make sure about intake and exhaust leaks - That will affect the 2 above conditions.
From a stop 3-4K or it sputters and hesitates - OK it doesn't have a lot of power below 3-4k, but it should sorta just about work on on a slight down hill if your jetting is OK and you have the patience to feather the clutch ...
Yea its gutless below 3k, it can move in first gear from about 2k or so, but that's about it.
Cool.

Well the idle is totally fine.. UNTIL I start cruising at about 50+. Let's say I'm cruising around the city.. I don't get a high idle.. But soon as I hit a freeway and then get off and come to a stop.. Boom... It idles high until I get home.. So it only idles high after I have been going pretty fast
OK from 3 1/4 try 3 1/2.
Oh, what does the idle plug pull look like ?
Cool.

I have it at 3.5 turns and its a little better but not fixed.. I'm sorry what's the idle plug pull?
