So, yeah. The time has come for me to confess my sins. I've lost my learner license for a while and now it's time to fix all the things I broke.
I dropped my bike twice and pulled out into a roundabout and got cleaned up once.

So, yeah, will emery paper be enough? I was going to smooth out the damage with emery paper, then sand the whole plate with wet-and-dry, then paint the cases matte black. The paint job is already really bad so I don't think I can make it any worse.
I was also thinking that some of the cuts might be too deep to smooth out and it might still show without something to fill it in. Body putty doesn't seem suitable, and I'm not sure using lead as filler will take the heat, or if that is even such a good idea in the first place considering the heating technique required to apply it.

Mine were both like that too... complete with big scratches across the black Suzuki circles from the PO. I actually replaced that cap in your first picture... the scratches in mine annoyed me enough to pay the $37 for a new one on Motosport.com... they call it a "cover, contact breaker" for the part description. You could maybe find a new one on eBay for less..?
The damaged part in your second picture however I just have learned to live with because everywhere I looked (granted this was over a year ago and I could have not known better places to look) a new one was over $100.
I have done a lot of sanding, filling, priming, painting, fixing things on cars etc but I really never came up with a good way to fix that other side. :icon_sad:

You can also buy just the black emblems for pretty cheap they just stick on with adhesive... so pry off the old ones and stick on the new ones.
Oh yeah you're right! I forgot to mention those. I keep a spare around just in case! ;) I got those off Motosport at the same time as that cover. The cover doesn't come with a Suzuki emblem. I just checked and they are $13.66 which may seem a bit much but I thought it was worth it considering how much of a difference they make in cleaning up the look of the bike :thumb:
Obviously you could track down replacement covers, but if you want to save money (and get some self-satisfaction at the same time) you can easily polish out those scratches.
Start with files, then go on to coarse wet 'n dry (or sandpaper), go down through the grades to about 1200, and then buff on a polishing wheel.
Yes you'll end up with polished aluminium covers, but that's a pretty nice look.
