Hey guys,
My understanding was that you had to rejet the GS500 if you decided to run a K&N Air Filter without the restrictor installed.
My 2009 GS500 is completely stock except for Iridium Spark Plugs. I'm running this bike on AMSOIL and using Premium Unleaded 95RON Fuel.
I've installed a K&N Air Filter, I have been using the restrictor with no problems, then decided to remove and see what happens.
I notice an increase of HP immediately, however not noticing any other issues or problems.
I've pushed it hard on the revs and over 100km/h with no ill effect and it actually runs better and more urgent with the restrictor removed.
So what problems will I likely find or am I causing any problems to my bike running it this way?
Its not something instantly noticeable, such as pouring a cup of gas into a camp fire, its more of an over time thing. In a nutshell, if you do not get it right (it being the carbs/air/fuel mix) then the engine runs the risk of running too hot and can cause damage to various internal engine parts in the long run. So at somepoint, either you or someone who knows how needs to adjust up the fuel to air ratio with the correct jet(s) and adjustments. As you mentioned, you have presumably fitted the K&N air filter to get more power, to get more power you have to burn more fuel than before and yes the bike will be less "efficient" as it is further modded ie: adding a can..You should do something sooner than later if you plan on keeping the bike (or even if not)
Add: there are tonnes of threads and experts on here who can provide you with the specific details on the "how" should you want to tackle it yourself.
Thanks Fraze,
I've read some other posts where they have made it very clear that Australian model GS500's should NOT have any rejetting due to the way they have been configured for this country.
Is this true and if the jets have been setup differently for this country, is it possible it will handle the removal of the restrictor better or should I just play it safe and put it back in?
Has anyone else removed the restrictor for a stock Aussie bike and have you had probs in the short/long term?
