So I'm mechanicly savy but new to bikes. I have an 82 gs450 that I need some help with. I know it's not a gs500 but this seems to be the only gs forum.
Ok, so I'm just getting off the thruway and my first stop the bike stalls out. I get it started back up but I have to hold the throttle open to keep it going. Mile down the road another red light and idle is perfect. 1200rpm. Next red lights idle is all the way up to 2200. I was thinking vaccum leak but I've just about ruled that out unless there's something I missed.
Since that started acting up I bought shorty megaphone mufflers, filter pods, 6 sigma jet kit. All parts are installed. Bike fires up instantly I've sync the carbs and have been tinkering with the mixture screws. So at this point my idle is ok.
Now onto revving it up, the rpms will "hang" at about 4k randomly. I've removed the carbs and inspected the slides and tested them using compressed air. They both seem to be moving fine. I've checked and adjusted the float level to spec.
One other thing I've noticed that there is significantly less exhaust gas pressure out of the right cylinder. And I think, think, that has been an symptom fr the start but I never thought to check. I've got 150 psi on both cylinders. There are no leaks in the exhaust system.
I'm kinda leaning towards a ign. Coil but I haven't tested it yet. Any suggestions or tips would be great and hopefully someone has some insight on this
First off, welcome to the site!
Second, head over to the GSResources and search around over there for info. A member by the name Basscliff has a separate site with a TON of manuals, wiring diagrams, etc for older GS bikes. Then search around for a jetting topic by Pete.
For everything else: a wandering idle is most commonly from an intake leak. Unless your carb boots and the orings underneath are NEW, they probably need replaced. Have you done the valve clearances yet? If not, you're going to be chasing your tail. And I can't remember which manual it is, but one of them has the float height set to the wrong height. Pete would know which manual is right and which ons wrong.
Oh yeah - post pics of the bike! Everybody likes pictures.....
Idle hover can be from an air leak in the airbox. Like for example my xs650 would hover if you didn't install that connector tube between left 1/2 of airbox to right 1/2. It wont test as an intake leak, it wont respond to wd40, but its got a loss of vacuum and hence it acts lean.
Cool.
Buddha.
I haven't replaced the carb boots seals but I took them off, cleaned them up and used red RTV when I put them back on. I'll check valve clearance i haven't done that yet. At the top of the valve cover there's a breather tube that went to the stock air box but I'm sure that wouldn't cause much of an issue.
