Recently my gs500 has been having starting problems when I try to start the bike. I just get a loud whine so I know it's something to do with the starter. I've been having to push start my bike to turn it on though it turns on just fine when its warm. I have a brand new battery in the bike as well so it's not that.
The bike has been sitting for 6+ months and I have not done an oil change (bad I know) but I haven't gotten around to it.
What could be the root cause, bad oil? Do I need to clean to starter clutch thing? How would I go about doing that.
Thanks.
Whine ? out of the starter ?
That's a first, but I have had dead starters on bikes before - just not the whining type of dead.
The clutch is on the left side, actually get the starter out, reconnect it with the thing outside and see if the whine is in it or in the clutch - the clutch usually wont whine, it will make a loud hammering noise ...
But then again, neither will a starter make a whine if you ask me - but lets check and see.
Cool.

It's this sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETetKuPv7tE
not my bike.
If your starter motor is spinning without turning the engine over it's probably the rotor/starter clutch assembly is loose on the crankshaft. See video:

I have an update, I've been riding for a few days now before I try to fix this issue because I ordered a new oil filter and I just plan on fixing it while I do an oil change, and the bike seems to be starting so far normally.
So if the starter clutch assembly is loose, would the bike still start normally on some days, but not on others?
Or would 1 Year plus no oil change and the bike sitting for 6 months be a cause?
