So my bike has been running perfect lbut lately it had been acting a little weird. After I wheelie which doesn't seem to have much power in first gear to lift up high my bike has been running poorly and surging. It like bogs down and almost "bucks" when you get on it and doesn't seem to respond but will kind of after a couple of seconds then continue surging. So I know the obvious answer is to not wheelie but I enjoy it. So I'm thinking it's an intake problem? Either gas or air? That sound about right or am I totally off? Thanks for the help. Btw it has no probl idling during this time
My guess would be fuel supply. How full was your tank? I recall a thread about running poorly when someone was riding on a graded highway. A wheelie is much steeper of an angle than most highway grades. Try running in Reserve or Pri and see if that helps. I have run out of primary gas on the highway and experienced what I'd describe as surging/poor running for 10-20 seconds before it stalled (not yet comfortable enough to switch to reserve on the move).
I know the carbs also rely on float bowls, which might have trouble with odd angles. This is just speculation, though.
Or, as you said, stop doing wheelies ;)
Fuel should be fine. Only 78 miles on the tank and usually I get about double that on a tank before reserve. Tried res when it happened to no avail. I thought maybe it's something with the valves if not fuel or air. Maybe the tipping back causes it to mess up. Popped one today and it seemed okay. Little hiccup after but nothing compared to the two days before. It's like the sudden burst causes extended complications than just right after
I know what you are talking about surging before running out and it's not that. Have experienced that quite often once in a turn. Little scary while trying to flip to res
I suppose it could just be the tipping in general, and only with 78 miles in doesn't mean that the tipping doesn't mess with the fuel flow any. I'm sure the designers of the GS did not have wheelies in mind when they made the fuel and air flow systems. But now I will have to sit back and let one of the real experts answer your question with more than mere speculation.
I've only personally run dry twice, once on the interstate on the way to work (my first) and once on an old rural highway. The interstate was a bit frightening since I didn't know what was going on; luckily nobody was tailgating me. I think if I wore thinner gloves I could do the valve on the fly, but I can't even find the thing when I'm just sitting there now, so there's no way when I'm moving.
Maybe this will narrow down possibilities or show more symptoms. So I tried it again, wheeling and the first was alright no problems. Then the second it started to pop up then got shut right now and all the surging happened. It almost feels like I'm going slow in a high gear with surging. So I don't know how but it stopped and I popped a few more and ran it hard and it seemed to be fine. Maybe clutch plates or oil? I don't know. Rpm increases and engine gets louder but acts like I'm at 4k rpm in 5th. Then will suddenly start to get power and lose it repeatedly. If that makes sense
If the engine rpms go up, but power to the wheel drops off and surges, then that is a clutch problem. You are probably due for a 3 point adjustment to the clutch. Do a search, and there are many posts that describe the process.
EDIT: And because I'm nice :)...
