Hey guys, love the sight and love my 2004 gs500 but it's giving me some problems so I'm hoping y'all can help. Ok so it won't turn over when I hit the starter button. The headlight and speedometer lights blink but I don't even here the starter trying to spin. I know it's not locked up because I roll cranked it earlier after the problem started. I also have replaced the battery and relay since the problem. So I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance for all of your help!!!
Safety cutouts?, clutch and sidestand plus make sure it's not in gear
Red switch right bar?
Make sure your battery terminal/leads connections are clean contact and firmly screwed down. .. put a voltmeter on battery, yes it's new but batteries can be tricksy and not always a heap of charge initially
You replaced relay so make sure the connections there are correct way and firmly tightened
Would say more a battery/connection issue than anything else but give it all a once over. . Starter system is not THAT complex overall and hoping you get an easy fix :)
Not in gear and all the safety cutouts have been checked like clutch and kickstand. The red switch is in the correct position. Connections are clean and its measuring 12.4 volts. Connections are right on the relay. I just went out and messed with it a little more and noticed that sometimes the lights flicker and sometimes they don't when I push the electric start. So could it be just a connection issue somewhere between the electric start and battery or maybe from the relay to the starter? Also I touched the posts of the relay together and it fired up and ran fine. However once I turned it off the same problem occurred and I don't think its safe to start the bike like that often.
My experience: below 12.5 will result in the conditions you mention. It's enough juice to turn on and crank but not start.
Can you bump start it?
Agreed, a 12.4 v battery needs a charge. Mine is normally at 12.9 while at rest,

First thing I'd do is jump it from a car or jumper unit. If it starts right up it's the battery. 12.5 volts is low but how accurate is the voltmeter. And no mention of location and ambient temps. If a jump from another larger battery doesn't start it then it's a bike problem, loose connection? Is pilot circuit to relay lighting up? etc.
Ok guys got out there today and tried to jump it off using my car and still got no response. I did notice that the lights dim sometimes when I push the starter button but sometimes they don't. Regardless I still don't get any response from the motor or starter. What's the next step?
Like Jack said, it could very well be a bad connection. Try checking inside the RH controls. Perhaps the kill switch got knocked loose.
If the Y/G wire to the starter relay lights up (test light or volt meter) when you push the starter button with the key on and safety switches closed then the pilot circuit is probably OK. If it doesn't light up then check back thru the circuit to the starter button for loose connections. See wiring diagram.
If it does light up then I'd take the battery and/or starter cables loose at the relay and touch them together to see if the starter turns over, if it doesn't check the cable to starter, if it does turn over check your new relay. Could be starter motor if everything else is OK.
