Title: Where are the spark plugs gs500
Post by: jdavids1 on October 08, 2014, 03:12:55 PM
Hey guys, noobie question here.

Where are my spark plugs on my 2007 gs500F?

Do I have to remove my fairings to access them to change them?

Kind of an odd question!

I keep my spark plugs in the top drawer of my tool box.  Can't you remember where you put yours?   Just kidding..

GS 500 has spark plugs right about where you'd expect, on top of the engine in the cylinder heads, between the cams... ..one on left side, one on right....

I always remove fairings to access plugs.....I don't think there is any way around that...you need room for a wrench...Plus you want everything in plain sight, and you want to clean up everything before removing /replacing plugs so crap doesn't get in the cylinders or in the spark plug threads.

If you intend to remove the fairings, it is really easy...but there are a couple of "gotchya's"....

There are two hidden plastic push rivets holding the fairing on, under the headlight area...you have to be sure to remove these or else you'll crack the fairing......also two plastic push rivets all the way  at the bottom front of the fairing...also keep the Allen head bolts straight and in order when you remove them...some are longer than others....they have to go back in the same  spots

Yea, I keep mine in the storage locker in the basement.

I have had the faring off several times now.  It only takes fifteen minutes , but a half hour to get it back on.  I always have to trial and error where the "short" and "medium" bolts go.  The "long" bolts attach to the frame.

I use a Motion Pro T-handle wrench...the one with the ball bearing handle...with a Allen socket....you can take off the fairings in way less than 5 minutes..Also install in less than 5 min.

I think it is 14 bolts all together and 4 plastic push rivets...you can go fast once you've done it a couple times..

I used to use and electric screwdriver, but too easy to strip Allen head bolts, they are kind of soft Stainless steel...

Usually once I have the fairings off...I take the time and wash them off with car soap and garden hose and big sponge...inside too...I also detail the parts of the bike normally covered by fairings...

ANother way to remember...the "long" bolts go to the top...two on right side, two on left side.
