Title: How 2 Fix a dented gas can
Post by: Duckman on February 05, 2004, 04:53:19 PM
Hello--  Got a 96GS with a bad dent on top of tank.  Is this tank a Dual wall so I can weld sticks to pull dent or a single wall to NOT weld sticks to pull dent?  Any one with an intelegent awnser can give an opinion.  Thanks All

When we prepped my bike for paint we just filled my dent...it was about 2" long; 1'' wide; and 1/2'' deep. The guy I worked with has been workin in body shops for years and didn't even consider pulling it or hammering it out. I hope this helps a lil bit.

The GS tank, as most if not all motorcycle tanks, are single wall.  Welding a stick on and pulling it are out, but what about some superglue-type material, or perhaps JB Weld?  Depending on the size and location of the dent, you might be able to try one of those suction cup devices to remove the dent.  Of course, you need a flat area around the dent to secure the outside cups.   Otherwise, it's either live with it or Bondo city.

I've never seen a double wall tank, and the GS definitely isn't.

I have no idea if these work anywhere but a TV studio:

BIG QUESTION......
Have you ever welded a gas tank before?????
Welding on a gas tank (including the outside) isn't a real safe thing to do..

Remember, it's not the gas that explodes....it's the fumes....and they don't wash out easily.
