Yeah Big Rich, I served from 1975 to 1981.
Worked as an Electronics Tech primarily on Air Traffic Control Radar systems when state-side, and on Tropospheric-scatter Radio systems when overseas.
Tell your Dad I said "Thank You".

Pop, B17 pilot WW2, first mission 12/24/43, Nobal France, V1 sites (under construction). Near miss from an 88 put 175 holes in his plane and knocked him out.
Last mission (of 30) D-Day 6/6/44 Caen France.
Was in London one week later when the V1s first hit the city.
Oldest brother Da Nang, Marine Corps.
Great Grandfather missed Gettysburg with stomach disorder, Union side. His brother was a doctor in the 7th cavalry, fortunately after Custer.
His grandfather or great grandfather was in the Maryland Line (Old Line State) that held off the British and gave Washington time to escape with his army mostly intact early in the Revolutionary War, New York. Washington's retirement celebration was with the survivors of the "old Line". He considered them the bravest of the brave.
I was deferred from Viet Nam due to a hernia. Had it repaired 40 years later.

As fate (and timing) would have it;
I myself enlisted shortly after the Fall of Saigon and left active duty well before The Gulf War.
I desperately wanted to go in the US Coast Guard in Costal Rescue Operations but ended up an electronics technician overseas in the US Air Force.
Go figure. Fate & timing again.

First ancestor in USA 1625,(indetured servant=slave with contract where they are free at 21) they lied about his age and basically tried to work him to death. He only lived 8 years after age 21 and had a single live birth male child. I think that child lived twice his fathers age and had 12 children. When I lived in Houston in 1981 there were 25 Greenwells in the Houston telephone directory. That is where my great uncle Samuel Alexander Greenwell lived and they are probably all related.
Pop is 93, married 68 years and still drives his 2001 Eldorado. His only surviving sister turned 102 on Halloween, born the same year the Ttianic sunk, 1912.
We could talk about the Crockett (mothers's mothers maiden name) side of the family but this already passes the threshold of a threadjack. Mom's cousin was on the carrier Hornet (Dolittle raid) from it's comissioning to it's sinking in the Battle of the Coral Sea.
He had a brother named David Crockett and they were related to the David Crockett of Alamo fame.

Beats me mech, my family settled in Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1792.
Maternal grandfather served in Europe in WW I, brother joined the Air Force during the Korean War. I was deferred for going to college, married, and had a kid. Wasn't like WW II where they took everyone warm and breathing up to age 46 towards the end.
Lost a grandson in the 101st back in 01, accident down at Ft Campbell. I'll have to hang in another 6 years to match your pop's 68 years married but I'll only be 88 then. :icon_lol:

A huge salute to every veteran of every country whoever offered their life to protect their fellow citizens. Pop found a copy of the manifest where John Greenwell came over with one of Lord Baltimore's expeditions. Long before there was an internet in the Library of Congress.
John Greenwell was born in Northumberland in 1625. I was wrong in my previous post. He arrived in Maryland in 1635 not 1625 which was his estimated birth date. This is his last will and testament.
