First off i want to say thank you for this awesome forum and gstwins.com for providing videos and instructions on how to clean my carbs!! I have the carbs off and just finished cleaning the jets. I did however strip 2 screws but managed to remove those with vise grips. I saw some people replace the screws with hex head or allen wrench head (incorrect term) screws. I bought zinc hex head for the 8 float screws and 4 for the top. Is hex head better then allen wrench head or vise versa? Any torque specs?
I just like allen wrench for the ease of removing and installing. The head type doesn't matter as long as it's something that won't strip or stay stuck. Theres no torque specified, just keep them snug and preferably tighten them how you would tighten lug nuts on a rim so that they're all fully seated.
Well the hex head isn't going to work because their is not enough room to get a socket around it. I could only find steel allen head screws at home depot so I'm going to check fastenal today to see if they have stainless or zinc.
Alright so I'm reassembling and have an issue. I'm installing the upper diaphram needle into the black diaphram and don't remember the order of the metal washers. I have a thick metal washer and a thinner metal one. Do these sandwich the Plastic washer and e-clip? big one on top? I tried to upload a picture but it's too big in size.
PIC! As you can see the thicker washer is off to the bottom left. Both are metal.

On a 04+ you put the fatter washer on top of the eclip. I dont think the other washer is original. You could put the thinner washer under the e-clip. It richens the mix a wee bit in the 1/4 throttle-3/4 throttle range. Not enough to notice really by the rider, but the bike runs a wee bit cooler.

Thanks budda! I think ill put the small washer below the plastic washer too bc I never took the plastic washer and eclip off so its gotta go on the bottom
You can leave that fatter washer out, so the spring doesn't have that extra preloading on it.

That's odd. Look in the parts diagram - maybe that part supposed to be there.

I have a bag of the stainless socket head cap screws for the bowls that are left over, since Fastenal would only sell like 50 at a time
I appreciate it danofthejungle I'm in Akron Ohio but Fastenal sold me only what I needed which was nice. Got it all back together today. The fat metal washer had a marking on it and when I looked into the plastic piece that fits through the top of the carb there is a little plastic lip that made that mark so I put the fat washer on the bottom, then the plastic washer, then the e-clip and finally the skinnier metal washer. Put the fuel filter on today, hooked everything back up and it started right up. Idled fine, revved nicely, didn't seem out of sync and when I lifted the airfilter out I didn't see any fuel backing up into the airbox. Unfortunately I didn't clamp the lines on the fuel filter tight enough and gas started pouring out so I shut it off, tightened the clamps and will wait until tomorrow after it dries to start it back up. Thanks everyone for all your help. It was a great feeling when it ran on it's own and I could put everything back together. Next winter project is the front forks.
